When police officers in New Castle, Pennsylvania, responded to a burglary in an apartment, they weren’t sure what they would find. While the scene was as dangerous as you would think, it was even more heartbreaking. They found a small puppy locked in a bedroom.

The pup was so starved that they could see every bone in her small body.

Still, she was excited to see them and seemed friendly. It was like she knew that they were there to help her. She didn’t waste any time getting to know the officers. Lawrence County Humane Society Vice President Elissa Druschel said:

“She crawled over to them and her tail was wagging the entire time. They kept her at the precinct overnight until they could bring her to us the next day.”

The puppy was very weak and fragile.

She hadn’t eaten in a very long time, and her body and organs were suffering as a result. She appeared to be happy despite all of this, but the humane society wasn’t sure if she would survive. They were going to do their best to try to save her, though.

Druschel explained:

“In the beginning, we weren’t sure that she’d make it. She was just so weak and emaciated. But she wouldn’t stop wagging her tail. It was going constantly.”

Surprisingly, the puppy did survive.

She got plenty of food and fluids, and the humane society gave her all the medical care she needed. When she was in the clear, the staff started posting about her online. Of course, there were plenty of people who wanted to adopt the adorable puppy. Druschel said:

“We posted about her and instantly this wave of support came pouring in. We started getting get well cards from kids mailed in from all over. People were sending her toys and treats. It warmed our hearts.”

They named the puppy Miranda, and the officers who originally found her came to the humane society to visit her often.

They were thrilled to see that she was going to survive and was doing so well. They all loved her and knew that she was meant to be with one of them. But who should take her?

Druschel added:

“I think it was always assumed that the officers who found her had first dibs. Those guys were her heroes.”

Officer Mark Lewis decided that he would take Miranda home with him.

He knew that she would make a great addition to his family. He explained:

“Pretty much right off the bat, I knew I wanted to adopt her. I’m ecstatic to be bringing her home. She’ll never see that kind of life she had ever again. She’ll be the most spoiled little dog you’ll ever see. She is almost unrecognizable now. She has so much spunk and goes nuts every time I walk into the room. It’s so uplifting to see that change in her.”

There is currently an investigation into the previous owner of Miranda, who left her to die in a locked room.

The officers are waiting to see what kind of justice Miranda gets and are fighting to make sure that her previous owner is held accountable for their actions.

Everyone is pleased to see that Miranda is doing so well and is finally with a family who will treat her right and take good care of her. They are also surprised to see that she is so friendly in spite of her rough start. Druschel added:

“This person is going to trial soon and hopefully we get some justice for Miranda. To come from such a bad background to now being so loved by everyone … It’s amazing.”
