We all know the stereotype about bears and picnic baskets, but the same can be said about garbage cans. Bears are known to be opportunistic feeders and will eat whatever food they can sniff out while expending the least amount of energy for the highest caloric intake.

Bears will often wander into human territory when they smell garbage.

They are known how to make a mess of people’s yards and driveways after rummaging through their garbage cans. They even make bear-proof garbage cans since the problem is so prevalent. Thankfully there are lots of things you can do to keep bears at bay.

According to Bearicuda.com, here’s what you should do in order to keep bears away from your property:

  • Place your garbage in an airtight plastic container in a bearproof trash can
  • Keep meat and fish frozen until you toss it out
  • Only feed birds between November and April while bears are denning
  • Don’t put sweets, meat or fish in your compost
  • Pour lime juice over your compost to reduce compost odors
  • Clean your barbecue grills well
  • Rinse food containers before placing them in the trash
  • Don’t leave pet food outside
  • Pick ripe food and throw away anything that has fallen
  • Keep your garage closed
  • Use electric fencing to protect your pets and valuable trees
  • Use loud noises, like air horns, marine whistles, or banging post and pans to scare bears away
  • Wave your arms, stomp your feet, and yell while using dominant posturing to scare bears away and teach them to fear you

But sometimes even those measures can’t keep bears at bay. Sometimes you need to take on more creative measures in order to get rid of a bear problem. And one man from Salem, Virginia did just that.

A bear had been eating out of his trash for weeks and got the perfect idea when he spotted a creepy looking Halloween doll at the local pharmacy.

It was a creepy clown that waves its arms around and makes crazy sounds when it’s activated by motion. So, he decided that he would strap the Halloween decoration on to his trash bin to see if it would scare the bear away when it was activated by the bear’s movements.

The bear approaches the trash can and looks suspicious of the clown but continues to try and remove the lid. He goes running as soon as the clown started moving. Check out the hilarious moment in the video below.
