Of all the stories of all the escaped pets that we’ve ever written, we never thought that we’d be writing one about a chicken. But one early morning in San Antonio, a chicken decided that she wanted to go on an adventure and jumped into the trunk of a delivery driver’s car, leading to one of the best social media posts we’ve ever seen.

Luckily, thanks to the power of the internet, the chicken was soon returned home safe, but not before the family shared their hilarious surveillance footage of the chicken’s bid for freedom for the world to see.

The surveillance footage shows the three chickens hanging around the delivery driver’s car as he takes bags of groceries up to the house.

They seem very interested, and for one chicken in particular, curiosity just so happens to get the better of her. She decides to jump up into the trunk of the car, unaware that the delivery driver is on his way back and is about to close the door on her!

“We have three [hens], Wynonna, Reba and Patty,” Justin Matthews told NEWS4SA.

Apparently, Reba is the one who fancies herself as the leader of the pack, and she’s always getting into mischief!

Justin described the moment that the delivery driver returned to his car, and hilariously, failed to notice the chicken sitting in his trunk.

“He’s on his cell phone the whole time so he doesn’t see it happen,” Justin said. “As he’s walking back looking at his phone, he shuts the trunk, gets in the car unaware of anything and just and just drives off.”

Four hours later, the family noticed that they were one chicken down and decided to check their surveillance cameras to see if they could find Reba on there. It was then that they discovered the hilarious moment that Reba made her getaway in the delivery driver’s trunk. We wonder what the other chickens were thinking as they watched the car drive away?

“The first thing we did after we saw the video, we called Instacart,” Justin said.

But the driver had some bad news.

After leaving the family’s home, he’d continued onto his next job. However, when he opened his trunk as Costco, he was surprised to see the hen hop out and couldn’t fathom how she had got in there in the first place.

“He thought it was a prank,” Justin said. “He thought somebody was pranking him. So he just let Reba wander off into the parking lot at Costco.”

Justin decided to reach out on Facebook and see if anyone knew the whereabouts of their mischievous chicken.

He knew it was a long shot, but all was not lost. Just as the family was probably beginning to think that they’d never see Reba again, social media managed to connect Justin with a good Samaritan, Susan Almaraz, who had rescued the chicken from the parking lot.

“I don’t want it to get run over because it’s a really busy area,” Susan said. “It’s all commercial. You know, the freeway is right next door. God forbid that she gets scared and runoff into the access road.”

The family was happily reunited with their beloved chicken later that same day, and Susan spoke of how social media had helped to match the chicken with their family.

“We really had no idea all of San Antonio had been looking for her. Everybody was kind of emotionally invested in this chicken and her safe return to be a part of that,” she said. “I mean, it’s kind of surreal.”

We’re so happy that Reba has been reunited with her family, and we hope that the mischievous chicken has learned her lesson when it comes to exploring!
