My heart was racing.

We always hear stories about unusual run-ins with animals at the zoo. But unlike most stories, this one is a little different. Because it’s not a human child or adult falling into the animal exhibits, it’s just the adventures of one feral black cat.

Zoo staff first noticed that something was going on when…

The Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary is no stranger to unusual animals. These animals include mountain lions, deer, and even kinkajou monkeys. But one of the most unusual animals they encountered was a feral black cat that wandered into the bear exhibits one day.

The feral black cat just showed up one day to eat dog food that was left out for the bears.

At first, the staff tried luring the cat away by leaving food outside of the exhibit, but this cat refused to listen and spent it’s day where it shouldn’t have gone.

Zoo visitors were worried about the cat because…

“Oh my Gosh, this is a regular cat!”

Everyone knows that cats are cute and black cats are some of the most visually striking of pets. But this black cat’s cuteness wasn’t the only reason it became a fast attraction for Zoo visitors. Guests were hoping for the best that the cat would remain safe, because they were worried about the bears hurting it.

This wasn’t an unfair concern, since the cat couldn’t have weighed more than 5-10 pounds and bears can weigh over 500 pounds.

One young child visitor may have said it best when he said:

“I thought he was gonna be eaten by the bear.”

Zoos regularly warn guests to…

Many zoos and zoo guides across the world urge parents to keep their children safe. Most safety tips clearly explain that children should stay on the safe side of walls, rails, and other dividers.

That’s because zoo animals are still wild and there’s no telling what can happen.

Visitors and guests from children to adults likely took these warnings to heart when they were thinking about the cat’s safety.

But luckily for the black cat…

But all concerns were quickly forgotten when the 500 pound bear, Sequoia, came to like the cat. Sequoia would walk by the cat and the cat would walk by Sequoia. Neither animal would go out of their way to bother the other. It was a pure example of live and let live.

The cat quickly earned a new name because..

The cat’s fast friendship with Sequoia earned it the name “Little Bear” from the zoo staff. This brave feline was as much a part of the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary bear exhibit as Sequoia was. In fact, you could say that these two unlikely companions had become the most unusual family around.

There’s a lot that could be said about this story, but one thing is certainly clear. Sequoia and Little Bear are living proof that no matter how different animals and people are, they can learn to just get along.
