On a bitterly cold January day in Vancouver, a cat gave birth to five kittens. The stray cat had no home where she could go to deliver her babies, so she settled for the first place she found: an outdoor laundry room with a freezing concrete floor.
Soon after the cat gave birth, four of the kittens tragically passed away because of the extreme cold. One tiny female kitten survived, and the cat was determined to keep her little one alive. She covered the kitten with her body to keep her warm, and she waited for someone to come and rescue them.
Thankfully, the owner of the laundry room found the cat and her baby before they froze, and they called animal services. The Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association (VOKRA) hurried over to pick up the two cats. Once they had the cats, they quickly drove to their rescue center, where they admitted the cat and her kitten into emergency care.
After they had been examined, rescuers fed the cats and gave them names: Calida for the mama cat and Sentrie for the kitten. Calida and Sentrie bonded while they recuperated in the rescue center. Once they felt better, workers began looking for a home that would take both the cats in.
Calida and Sentrie’s story has a wonderful happy ending. In April, VOKRA revealed in a Facebook post that the cats had found a forever home with a couple named Amy and Kevan.
“Sentrie, in typical kitten fashion, is full of beans and doesn’t sit still for very long,” VOKRA wrote on their Facebook page. “Calida’s still a bit nervous at times, but is getting more comfortable with each passing day.”
In their Facebook posts about Calida, VOKRA stressed the importance of spaying and neutering cats to prevent tragedies like the deaths of Calida’s kittens.
Thanks to Calida’s determination and bravery, she was able to save her kitten and give her a great life. This mama cat is a true hero.
