After being thrown away in a backpack and discovered in a dumpster, a sweet ginger kitty named Hiro has gotten a brand-new lease on life!
In 2016, a woman in Alberta, Canada, was outside taking out the trash when she noticed a big backpack in the garbage can. Upon closer observation, she realized that something was moving inside. The woman immediately opened up the bag and was surprised to find another bag inside. When she opened up the second bag, she was shocked to see a sweet ginger kitty in very bad shape.
The woman called Alberta Animal Services who arrived within minutes to rush the kitty to emergency care. The poor boy had gone through unspeakable trauma, and no one was sure if he’d make it out alive.
Hiro was suffering from head trauma, a broken pelvis, neurological problems, and blindness, TODAY reports. Some of the injuries were old while others were new. He was skinny and frail and had almost suffocated while he was trapped in the bag.
Still, the sweet ginger kitty kept fighting.
One week after his rescue, Hiro was completely transformed. He looked like a brand-new cat with clear eyes and newfound strength. He was still a little shaky, but he could now stand on 4 paws and balance by himself.
The most amazing part though? Despite everything Hiro had been through, as soon as he started feeling better, he just wanted to thank his rescuers with endless snuggles and love.
“He’s so affectionate despite all that he has gone through,” Alberta Animal Services told Love Meow. “As soon as he hears or sees the animal nurses he starts purring and demanding cuddles.”
A few weeks later, Hiro had to have hip surgery— but he bounced right back and was finally ready for a loving foster home.
“After strict screening and home visits,” the rescue said, “We picked an amazing family who will give Hiro the best life filled with love, kindness and future care.”
Hiro went to go live with foster Mum Jennifer and his new Daddy James. They permanently adopted him soon after.
Jen and James named Hiro ‘Hiro Stanley’, after Jennifer’s father who was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. Although doctors told him he only had 2 months to live, he defied all odds and is still around today. According to TODAY, Jen likes to think her Dad and Hiro are “both too stubborn” to be taken that easily.
The couple also selflessly donated 25% of the rescue’s next 10 adoption fees to give back to the community that saved their beloved furry boy.
Hiro has come a long way since being found— and he’s continued to purr, fight, and cuddle every step of the way.
“Together we got Hiro through Hell and back,” the rescue said. “He spent 50 days in our care and against all odds, he survived his injuries.”
Now with a wonderful home and bright future ahead of him, he is destined for endless snuggles and love. Furever mom Jen says, “As soon as Hiro was named, I believed it was perfect because of his relentless fight against the odds to win his battle to live.”
“He really is a super Hiro.”
