When you do something bad, you get punished. These are the rules of society. Usually, they work out pretty well; criminals get punished, naughty children get a timeout, and in the end, everything is well in the world.
Last week, one kitten prisoner made a grand prison break after being trapped in the Tamworth Correctional Centre in New South Wales, Australia. Luckily, however, authorities were on this little escapee’s side.
The tiny kitten had become trapped in the jail’s storm water drain, and when authorities discovered her, they knew they had to help her get out. Correctional officers called in the NSW Fire & Rescue team and the two teams immediately got to work.
Shane Austin, station officer, told The Land, “Because it was in the longyard, which is where the inmates exercise, we had to lock everyone down.”
Once emergency teams had secured the location, this kitty’s grand escape plan was immediately put into action. The Fire & Rescue team wasn’t able to physically reach the kitten. So, they decided to see if they could put their water to good use.
According to The Land, firefighters grabbed the hoses to see where the water would flow. After confirming they water was going to the right area, they increased the pressure and were able to slowly push the kitty to safety.
“We gave the poor little creature a bit of a waterslide right out of there,” Austin explained.
“I was over and done with pretty quickly, but she came out looking a bit worse for wear— you know what cat’s look like when they’re wet.”
When it comes to rescuing kittens, NSW’s Fire and Rescue team say it’s all just part of the job, and Austin considers this feline prison break “the classic firefighter case of rescuing a kitten in a distress.” When it comes to saving lives, he is quick to note his team does not discriminate: “We offer [cats] the same rescue services as people.”
After the kitten was freed from the jail, she was taken to a local shelter. Austin wants the 4-week-old to find a loving forever home and hopes her new family will name her after a notorious female criminal in honor of her great escape.
