As a mom, you’d do anything to keep your baby safe. So our heart breaks for the stray cats who have to bring their kittens into the world in a place that is hardly deemed safe for an adult cat, let alone her babies.
Stray animals are often constantly on the move, stopping only to sleep somewhere dark and sheltered where they feel a little more protected, like a bush or underneath a car. Cats are usually pretty good at fending for themselves – they’re great hunters and are able to run quickly if they need to. But when a mom has kittens to look after, she becomes urgently in need of some help.
This was the case for one mama cat in the Bronx, NYC, who was determined to keep her babies safe even though her living situation was anything but safe. Luckily, a rescue team rushed to help, and this story has a happy ending!
When the mama cat from the Bronx gave birth to four beautiful kittens, she tried her best to keep them safe – but it soon became obvious that she needed help. Little Wanderers NYC was the rescue team for the job, with their aims being to save “the neediest cats in the toughest areas of NYC.”
When they received a call about the mom and her babies, a volunteer at Little Wanderers named Ariana immediately took a trip to the area. It took a couple of hours of searching the neighborhood before the family was spotted.
The kittens were instantly taken to safety, but sadly, after a life on the streets, the mom was too untrusting of her rescuers and ran away when they tried to approach her.
However, rescuers weren’t about to give up that easily. They knew that the mama needed to be in a safe place with her kittens, so before leaving that day, they left a safe, humane trap that the mom would hopefully walk into.
The next morning, Ariana found the cat safe and sound in the trap, and she was instantly taken to be reunited with her babies.
Another volunteer at the center named Antionette was taking care of the kittens at her home, where they were cleaned, defleaed, fed, and made comfortable.
Despite being brought into the world on the streets, the kittens were all healthy and active and loved exploring their new foster home. The mama cat, who the team named Remony, was still a little untrusting of humans, but she was overjoyed to be reunited with her kittens, who all rushed over to her instantly.
After some time, the mom began to feel more comfortable around the rescue team. But it was going to be a long time until she felt confident around all humans.
“I know she feels safe from her body language, but she is going to take more time to get acclimated to people,” Antoinette explained in an interview with Love Meow.
The kittens were named Savannah, Sterling, Sutton, and Silas, and they continued to thrive and grow in confidence in their new foster home.
One day, the family will go on to have their own permanent furever homes, but for now, they’re enjoying life at their foster home together.
We’re so grateful for the rescue organizations for continuing to save animals all over the world. Without Ariana and her team, these sweet kittens might not have had such a happy ending.
