Pokey’s parents, Jen and Ian, took Pokey in as a foster a few weeks after he was born. He was a singleton, which means he wasn’t born in a litter. Singletons often need special care since they can have trouble socializing. As Pokey’s parents provided him with the social skills he needed, they fell in love with him.

After a few weeks fostering him, Jen and Ian knew they couldn’t give Pokey up, and they officially adopted the sweet cat.

Before adopting Pokey, Jen and Ian had regularly fostered cats. They weren’t sure how Pokey would respond to the other cats, though, so they stopped fostering for a couple years. When Pokey was about two or three, they realized how much they missed fostering, and they decided to give it another try.

Jen and Ian decided to keep the kittens and Pokey in separate rooms at first. They weren’t sure how Pokey would respond to the kittens.

One day, the couple noticed the door to the kittens’ room was open. They looked inside and found Pokey playing with the new kittens!

To Jen and Ian’s surprise, Pokey absolutely loved having foster kittens in the house. He became a surrogate dad for the kittens.

Pokey was especially good with other singletons—he seemed to realize they needed a bit more help learning important cat skills, and he was happy to help them.

Pokey is so good at caring for singletons, the rescue Jen and Ian work with have started sending the majority of their single kittens to them.

Pokey is always a bit sad when the kittens have to leave, and he makes his feelings very clear to his parents. In a YouTube video, Jen said:

“Those first few days after a kitten leaves, I mean, I, like, struggle to breathe because he’s just, like, all up in my face. And then after a few days, he gets antsy, and he’ll start deliberately causing trouble. It’s not subtle at all.”

Luckily for Pokey, Jen and Ian regularly have kittens in their house. Pokey is always excited when he sees a new kitten waiting for him—he has so much he wants to teach them!

Jen and Ian decided to start an Instagram page to document Pokey’s adventures. Now, over 50,000 people follow the account—everyone loves seeing cute photos and videos of Pokey playing with kittens.
