Cats are known to be pretty independent creatures. Although the internet is awash with cat people, many of us like cats because they are easy to live with. They don’t require much oversight, they’re relatively clean and they tend to do their own thing when we’re not around. Still, all of these qualities also make them very stubborn and hard to control. Cats can be fickle and difficult to train as a result of their bold personalities. What many people don’t know though is that cats can be trained—using the right techniques.

More specifically, here’s how to teach your can to jump through a hoop with just six easy steps.

1. Train your cat to jump over your outstretched arm next to a wall with a treat.

This first part is not too difficult. Even if cats are known to be disobedient, getting your cat to follow food over your arm is an easy part of this process.

2. After your cat masters that part, take the treat away and repeat the process with just your finger.

By this point in the process, your cat should be used to the process and will follow your instruction without needing a treat to do so. Easy!

3. Take your tracing finger away and have your cat simply jump over your arm.

This part makes sure that your cat understands the basic foundation of this trick: if your hand is outstretched, you want him or her to jump over it.

4. Add your other arm above your first arm, still on the wall.

In the second phase of this trick, you begin to move from the idea of a barrier to clear to a hoop to go through.

5. Tighten the gap between your arms (still on the wall).

This one is just a refinement of the last one and cements the idea of the hoop. You’re almost done…

6. Make a hoop with your arms without the wall.

After all of this, your cat should be able to understand the trick all on its own! Some more treats may be in order here.

As it turns out, cats are not all that different to train than any other animal. This tutorial is one of many offered by Cat School Cat Training, a business designed to help owners teach their cats all kinds of cool tricks! They have their own webpage and Instagram where you can learn more about their other offerings.
