People often think communication is made up of speaking and writing— but body language also plays an important role. It’s said that human body language is a result of both genetics and culture. Some behaviors, like smiling, are thought to be primal, rooted somewhere in our evolutionary past. Others, like nodding or shaking your head for ‘no’, for example, are known to vary from place to place.

As mentioned, many scientists believe that certain body language is primal; so, it’s not surprising that animals use it to communicate as well.

Parrots, for example, are said to be able to control the irises of their eyes and can make them change sizes at will. When the parrot is excited or interested in something, the irises grow big and round. Tigers also use body language in a variety of ways. Their ears are particular telling: the ears twist when the tiger is feeling aggressive and go down in a state of defensiveness. When the feline is happy and relaxed, on the other hand, the ears sit upright.

Elephants, like dogs, are known to swish their tails when happy, and you can also see them become stiff when stressed. Heck, even the common Sydney octopus is reported to communicate by changing colors— aggressive ones becoming darker while fleeing ones change to pale.

Cats, however? Cats are a complete mystery.

In 2014, Adam Ellis from BuzzFeed published 15 hilarious explanations of common cat behavior. Everything from rolling on the carpet to making squinty eyes was included— and, although these explanations weren’t the most scientific, they definitely made cat lovers everywhere roar with laughter. A few years later, the cartoons were discovered, bv imgur user ItsJayOrDan, hanging on a corkboard in a veterinarian’s office. It’s fairly obvious this vet has an amazing sense of humor- but I can only imagine the faces of unexpected people who walked up to the board expecting legitimate information. At the very least, I know they got a great laugh.
