Dogs are the most loyal creatures, but they, too, might leave their owners at some point and never come back.

Of course, it is usually not the dog’s fault, since they get excited with something they follow or chase, and then can’t find their way back home.

Every year, about 10 million pets are lost in the USA, and many of them end up in shelters.

It is heartbreaking both for the owners to come to terms that their best friend is no longer with them, and for the dogs to find themselves in an unfamiliar shelter among other dogs, or -even worse- to end up on the street.

This is exactly why every dog needs to have preferably two forms of identification on them, whether they are indoors or outdoors.

One is the collar, which has the name of the dog and contact details of the owner on it. However, although this is a good way to identify a dog, it can be easily lost or removed.

This is why all dogs need to be microchipped. Because it can help find a missing dog even many years later.

In this story, a dog’s microchip helped a California woman reunite with her four-legged friend who had been missing for twelve years.

When Michelle got Zoey, the dog was only six months old and living in a shelter along with her twin sister.

Michelle, at the time residing in Lafayette, California, took the dogs home and made them proper members of her family. She loved them and they spent lots of fun time together.

Until one day, the family went to the shop for twenty minutes, and, when they got back Zoey had gone.

“They were with us for about six months and then we went to the store for about 20 minutes and came back and she was missing,” Michelle recalled.

Zoey was reported missing back in 2010 and, after five years the microchip company registered her as “deceased” in their records.

This was probably what everyone believed, although it hurt. But it was highly probable. Zoey couldn’t have survived so many years out on the street.

But the dog, against all odds, survived and made an unlikely comeback.

A few days ago, Animal Services Officer Brandon Levin received a call about a black SUV dumping a dog at a property near Stockton, California.

Levin went to the indicated location and found the dog. To his surprise, when he scanned her for a microchip, he found out that she did actually belong to someone. He saw that the dog had been reported missing back in 2010.

Given the years that had gone by, Levin didn’t expect to find the owners on the phone. But, amazingly enough, Michelle had not changed her phone number, although she had since then moved to Benecia.

When the woman found out about Zoey’s reappearance, she couldn’t wait to meet her again.

In a video posted by San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, Michelle can be seen petting the old dog and commenting on how cute she is.

Zoey has returned home, where she will spend the rest of her life, together with her family.
