Gwen Maxwell was on her way out the door when she saw what appeared to be an injured puppy trying to cross the street. The 85-year-old ran up to the pup to see what was wrong with it since it seemed to have trouble moving.
She soon discovered that the poor animal was covered in cacti.
She was shocked at the condition that the animal was in. But she was even more shocked when she realized it wasn’t a dog but a coyote pup that was barely a few weeks old.
The little baby was completely covered by seven chunks of chola cacti that were stuck to his legs, shoulders, and face.
The coyote pup collapsed to the ground, so Maxwell ran to get help from her neighbor.
“He’d get up and tumble around with all those chollas on him, and it was just so heartbreaking,” she said.
Thankfully there were two men from a nearby golf course who came to the coyote’s aid.
They used heavy duty gloves and pliers to remove the cacti from the coyote’s skin.
The sweet coyote pup remained calm while the men worked on him, and never once snapped at them or cried.
Which is surprising because the poor little guy ended up getting bloody and bruised from the cactus.
After he was freed from the plant that attacked him, the coyote ran off to where his mother was.
The two of them then ran off into the bush. Thank goodness those gentlemen from the Recreation Centers of Sun City were nearby to make sure that that the pup was safe and sound and that the mother could have her pup back.
