When Alec Karcher and his family learned their 10-year-old Boxer-Labrador mix Cody had terminal bone cancer, they were devastated. For 10 years, the sweet dog had been unfailingly loyal to them, and he had provided the family with tons of love.
“He’s such a loyal dog. We call him ‘our old gentleman’ because of how he looks out for us. He’s the ideal companion,” Karcher’s mom, Lynn Morris, told WAFB Channel 9.
Karcher and his family wanted Cody’s last few months to be perfect. And so, they decided to give him his favorite treat every day: cheeseburgers! Cody loved cheeseburgers, and they also made it easier for him to take his medicine.
“We wanted to thank him for being such a good boy,” Morris said.
For the first few weeks, Karcher or his mom made Cody his daily burger. But one day, they decided to get Cody his burger from a Burger King in Toledo, Ohio.
Karcher and his mom ordered at the drive-thru. They asked for a plain cheeseburger, and the worker, Ashley, was curious why they didn’t want anything on it. They explained Cody’s story, and Ashley was touched.
Ashley asked the family to wait for a minute while she talked to her manager. When she came back, she told the family they would give Cody free cheeseburgers for the rest of his life.
“I can’t explain how much this means to me, and my family and I are beyond appreciative,” Karcher wrote on Twitter.
Karcher and Morris were both amazed by this act of kindness. When they got home, Karcher tweeted about what happened.
Thanks to @BurgerKing for showing so much love and kindness towards my family and our dog, Cody. It’s appreciated more than words can describe. pic.twitter.com/KsKnfXtv0S

Karcher’s Tweet quickly went viral, and it even received a response from Burger King’s official Twitter account.
The CEO of Bennett Management Corporation, which owns the Burger King franchise where Cody is getting his burgers, put out a statement saying how proud he was of his employee.
“We are very proud of our employees,” the CEO, Jimmy Harmon, said in a statement. “We were also very touched by the story and have sympathy for the family and their dog in these tough times.”
Thanks to a kindhearted Burger King employee, Cody’s last few months will be filled with all the burgers he can eat. This kind employee has helped add a little light to Cody’s family’s life during this tough time.
