When someone messes with his nest, the “cute” comes off and the “fury” comes in.
Rabbits are widely regarded as one of the most adorable pets you can have. Together with their big button eyes and fluffy butts, rabbits are usually curious yet tender creatures. That is, until you mess with their nests.
This is what happened to Rhubarb when his owner kept on trolling him during bedtime. In a video posted on YouTube that has been seen and replayed over 2.7 million times, Rhubarb was tidying up his bedding when his owner kept on putting back a toy on his nest.
All of a sudden, this furry little critter has his temper in full red, as his full fluffiness was tossing and flipping the toy out of his nest.
At first, you can see Rhubarb just latching on the toy before throwing it out. It’s just another day, another mess for him. Then, his frustration slowly escalates when the same toy keeps on coming back, and it was returning to him faster than he could toss it out.
Even when he started kneading with his bedding, he was alert enough to know when his owner was up to no good. He quickly turns and tosses the toy out of his way.
There are even moments where he got on his two feet to slam down the rattling mess out of his turf for good.
While they’re so fluffy and playful, rabbits are aggressively territorial. In the wild, rabbits can dig up to nine feet deep into the ground in tunnels called warrens. They defend these homesteads in paramount vigilance in case of intruders or predators that may invade their homes.
These habits are carried on by domesticated rabbits. In fact, when you plan on keeping a rabbit as a pet, you should be able to provide them with a place where they can be alone, and ground to hop around and forage on.
So it’s not really surprising that Rhubarb is not taking any of these shenanigans in his turf.
At one point, he even got smarter as to toss the toy away from his owner and onto the opposite side of his nest.
Unfortunately, the metal rails are in the way so he doesn’t have a choice but to slam the toy down near his owner’s reach.
But as one of the commenters on the video pointed out, even if the rabbit might look exasperated from his owner’s trolling, it doesn’t mean that it’s upset.
Whenever they feel threatened or uncomfortable, rabbits usually “thump”, or drum one or both their hind legs on the ground.
Since rabbits are not vocal like animals, they resort to a different way of communicating threats to their warrens. They usually remain in this posture until the threat is gone so it’s best to take them away from these upsetting situations.
While the owner’s pretty playful in annoying his rabbit, we sure do hope that he doesn’t experience something like that when he’s about to sleep. Who knows, his rabbit might turn the tables and run over his head while he’s taking that snooze after a long day of work.
