In order to save himself from a pack of vicious dogs who were attacking him, Goldie had to desperately dig his way underneath a house in order to stay safe.
“When they finally stopped attacking him, he kind of trenched back underneath the mobile home,” Cofounder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC Stacey Silverstein told The Dodo.
Goldie was severely injured in the attack and was found by animal control who took him to the Corsicana Animal Shelter in Texas.
“He had to literally be dragged out from under the house by rescuers,” one of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC’s volunteers wrote in a Facebook post.
The poor Golden Retriever was lying in the shelter with serious injuries.
That’s when Rescue Dogs Rock NYC swopped into rescue Goldie and brought him in for some medical attention.
“He had wounds and gashes on every part of his body,” Silverstein said. “He was in shock.”
The emergency vet ended up saving Goldie’s life by stitching him up and administering him high levels of antibiotics.
Goldie, however, still had a long road to recovery ahead of him.
Goldie had to spend the next two weeks at a primary care veterinary office in Texas before Rescue Dogs Rock NYC transferred him to a vet in Long Island, NY where he spent another two weeks.
“For days Goldie was so fearful he could not even move, but slowly he realized he was safe and started to regain his confidence,” Rescue Dogs Rock NYC wrote on Facebook.
Goldie ended up recovering nicely but no one stepped up to adopt him until his picture was posted on Facebook.
“I remember thinking, ‘What is going on? How does this dog not have a forever home?'” Silverstein said. “But after a Facebook post, we got a gazillion applications for him. And that was it.”
One of the rescue organization’s volunteer spotted Goldie and knew he would be perfect for his girlfriend.
“My girlfriend lost her [rescued] Golden to cancer a while back. She has two other rescue animals (a Havanese and a cat),” he wrote in a Facebook post.
“I posted his picture on FB and my girlfriend immediately responded with ‘I think he’s the one.’ Two of my fellow rescue peeps who work with and alongside RDR helped put me and my girlfriend in touch with RDR. My girlfriend put in an adoption application and went to meet him in the vet’s office in Huntington, NY. She said she knew it was meant to be because their last Golden also came out of a vet’s office in Huntington.”
You’d think that he would be wary of other dogs and animals after his attack but Goldie, who was renamed “Dak,” got along fine with his new four-legged siblings.
“Now he’s doing amazingly,” Silverstein said. “He’s in an amazing home. He loves everyone, every dog, cat. He’s completely healed, and he’s a complete miracle.”
