You never forget someone who was kind to you – even if that “someone” was an animal! Ezphia Rennock is a man who had one of the experiences and was able to make an incredible repayment of the animal who helped him.
Fifteen years ago, Rennock met a horse named Agricola.
Rennock, now a 35-year-old, is from Lancashire, England. He served in the Blues and Royals, a segment of the British Army for nearly a decade. As part of the Household Cavalry, he was paired up with a horse that was known as a troublemaker.
When horses are called troublemakers, it usually means people have a tough time handling them.
Horses aren’t just machines that do whatever we tell them – they are living, breathing, animals that are incredibly smart and emotional.
Stubbornness can be caused by laziness, fear of the unknown, or a lack of faith in the rider. When you teach your stubborn horse the following lesson, you are teaching him a higher level of obedience. – Equine Wellness
When Rennock got to meet the naughty horse, he knew it was a match.
They were immediate friends and the stubbornness that Agricola was showing probably wasn’t his issue, it was likely a rider problem. When Rennock was with him, it was like he was a different horse!
“Coming away from home as a 17-year-old it was difficult, and Agricola was where I found companionship,” Ezphia told Daily Mail. “I loved all of the horses, but Agricola was special.”
As the two served together, they kept on growing closer.
Like all things, however, things had to come to an end. While Rennock was young when he first enlisted, he wasn’t going to be that way forever! Eventually, he would be moved or would retire from the military. While he was still serving, he would sit with him and pet him:
“I used to sit there with him every day and tell him that one day after retiring I would come back and adopt him so we could be together once we had completed our service,” he said.
In 2007, it was finally time to retire.
Rennock didn’t think he would ever see his friend again. Thankfully, fate had something else in mind. After a decade of retirement, he heard about Agricola from a friend. Agricola was about to be retired as a cavalry horse!
When Rennock heard that, he immediately went to see if he could bid for his old friend.
Although he wasn’t the highest bidder, the auctioneers received a letter that detailed their history.
The auctioneers loved the story behind the friendship and immediatley called him up!
“Although I was not the highest bidder, they called me instantly and told me to come and pick him up,” he explained. When the old friends were reunited, Ezphia said he “recognized me instantly” and, “It was as if I hadn’t ever left.”
Now, Rennock brings his daughter with him to ride.
Since Agricola is in retirement, he gets to relax and hang out! His human friend visits him every day and even brings his daughter with him. You never forget someone who changed your life – even if they are a horse!
