Anyone who’s encountered Serbia during the wintertime will know that things can get cold.
We’re talking thick snow, fog, icy winds, intense frosts, and temperatures of around 32 Fahrenheit.
So when the owners of the Dog Rescue Shelter in Mladenovac, Serbia, receive a call about a dog who is sleeping in a drain pipe beside a regional road in freezing conditions, they know they need to act fast.
In a video posted onto the shelter’s YouTube channel, we can see volunteers Dejan and Milan driving down a snow-lined road in search of the drain pipe that the dog is said to be living in.
They pass many pipes that are buried in snow, but then they eventually spot one that has an opening that is still uncovered.
The people who called said that the brave mama dog only comes out of her pipe when someone passes by, so the men whistle and pace around the area so that the pooch will know they are there.
Just when we are giving up hope, there is movement.
The mama dog pokes her head curiously out from the drain. Can you see her?
The incredibly trusting pooch rushes up to the men and happily lets them pet her. But she is desperate for help, and the men can sense it.
They lock the mother up safely in their rescue van and go to investigate. The mama is so trusting of the men that she lets them do this, knowing that they are going to do whatever they can to help her.
Heartbreakingly, when Milan shines a torch into the drain, he comes face to face with three tiny puppies, who look frightened and cold. Though luckily, they are all alive.
It’s now a race against time to get these puppies out before nightfall, and the temperature is already beginning to drop.
Sadly, rescuing the puppies isn’t an easy task. They have probably never encountered humans before, and unlike their mama, they don’t have much trust in the two men.
In an attempt to encourage them to come out, the men offer the puppies some tasty food. But the attempt does not work since the puppies are still taking their mama’s milk.
Next, Dejan pokes branches into one opening of the drain in the hopes that they will be frightened and run out of the other side where Milan is waiting.
But still, the puppies do not move.
Finally, Milan takes a broom and gently guides the puppies out by pulling the broom toward him. At last, he has all three puppies in his arms.

The puppies are now placed into the van next to their mama, where they immediately cuddle up to her. Mom looks gratefully up towards the men as if to say, “I was right to trust you!”
It was long and tiring work. The men don’t get back to the rescue center until nightfall, and once they do the pooches need extra care and attention.
They are taken into the warmth, where they are given food, cosy beds, and minor veterinary treatment.
Finally, the puppies are safe, and mama can relax knowing that her bravery has saved her babies’ lives.
You can see her gratitude towards the volunteers as she kisses Milan’s face and looks up at him with her big blue eyes.
The rescue center is truly doing an amazing job, and many animals wouldn’t survive without them. Watch the full video below, and get those tissues ready!
