Everyone loves a good animal rescue story, but Lucky’s and Gavin’s story tops them all. What could have ended as a tragic instance of animal cruelty ended as a heartwarming story of compassion and friendship instead.
Erin Brown was driving her 14-year-old son, Gavin, to a birthday party on Sunday, February 12, when she gasped in horror. They were on a busy overpass and a moving vehicle ahead of them had just thrown a cat out of the window. Erin slammed on the brakes, and when she did, Gavin jumped from the vehicle and proceeded to signal to oncoming traffic to stop.
According to Erin, the poor cat was scrambling all over the highway, trying to get a grip on the pavement. When he did, he ran straight to the edge of the overpass, about to jump off.
Gavin, having slowed traffic, ran after the cat and caught him right as he leaped from the bridge.
“Not sure which I’m in more shock of, the cat being thrown out a window of a moving vehicle on 196 or my son flying out of my car onto the highway and diving into an overpass to rescue a cat,” Erin shares.
We can share Erin’s sentiments. On one hand, the cat being thrown out of a moving vehicle is such a shocking display of animal cruelty, the likes of which make you feel physically ill. On the other hand, Gavin’s selflessness and bravery, though noble, could have gotten him seriously injured or even killed.
Fortunately, all ended well. The cat cuddled up to Gavin and clung to him for dear life, inherently knowing that Gavin would never let him get hurt again.
Lucky – the cat’s new name given to him by his savior – was taken to BluePearl Animal Hospital to be treated for his injuries. His nails were torn off from trying to grip the pavement, and he was badly bruised. He was given medication to relieve the pain.
All the while Lucky was receiving care, Gavin remained by his side. He was emotionally distraught over the whole incident and wanted nothing more than to see his new baby get better.
As if Gavin’s heroism is not enough good news to share with you, the story gets even better. Having heard about Gavin’s and Lucky’s story, a good samaritan offered to pay for a majority of Lucky’s medical expenses. Touched by the kindness, Gavin began to cry and then proceeded to spend what little money he did have to contribute to the final bill.
“My heart just swelled with gratitude,” Erin said. And, we’re all sure, with pride at having raised a son who is truly one-of-a-kind.
Lucky is recovering wonderfully at his new home and has even started to get over the trauma. “[He] is so far the sweetest cat I have ever met! He is so mellow and playful and just plain loveable,” gushes Erin. “Lucky is well aware that Gavin saved him and their bond is one I just can’t describe.”
While Gavin has always loved animals, Lucky’s story has inspired him to make his dream of becoming a veterinarian a reality.
