It is often said that the relationship between humans and dogs is extremely strong, but bonds between dogs themselves can at least be equally as powerful. The beautiful story of German Shepherd’s Babs and Bart is definitely a perfect example of that.
Babs and Bart used to love on the streets of Denton, Texas together. These two animals had no one else to take care of them except for each other. Luckily, rescuers have taken Babs and Bart off the streets and the two are now awaiting an adoption.
Their story is extremely special because Babs is completely blind and completely relies on Bart.
Bart always walked right in front of her, just close enough for both of them to touch and warn each other if there was an obstacle on their path. The two are inseparable and it’s absolutely amazing to see the love these dogs have for each other.
Laura Cherry is currently taking care of the 5-year old Babs and the one year younger Bart until they find a forever home together via adoption.
“I am crazy about them, obviously!” she said. “They were on the street together, and he kept her alive. She couldn’t see.”
When the pair was rescued by the organization DFW Rescue Me, veterinarians diagnosed Babs with severe glaucoma which caused her to lose her eyesight. The condition is so serious that the doctors had to remove Babs’ eyes altogether.
“The way that he takes care of her and the way she takes all her cues from him is really amazing,” Laura said.
Bart is quite literally Babs’ eyes, and he guides her around everywhere they go together.
As you can imagine, the pair is most comfortable at a familiar place such as Laura’s home, for example, as they don’t have to deal with foreign obstacles, sounds or smells.
“She usually stays where she can bump her shoulder against his hip bones,” she mentions.
Bart and Babs are doing a lot better now that her glaucoma has been treated and the two have been taken off the streets. Unfortunately, Laura isn’t able to take care of the adorable pair permanently, but the DFW Rescue Me organization hopes that a new adoption home can be found for these two friends quite soon.
“Finding that interesting mix that’s perfect for them is just taking a little longer,” Laura said.
In the meantime, Laura is very happy to have them around for a while until they’re adopted. People who are interested in adopting Babs and Bart can get in touch with DFW Rescue Me.
Unconditional love!
