For five years, an animal lover named Eryn took care of a blind raccoon who often came into her Illinois backyard.
The poor raccoon often ran into things, and he was afraid of strong wind, birds, snow, and high grass. He also had trouble finding food on his own, so Eryn fed him almost every morning. His bottom lip was missing, so she gave him soft foods like pasta noodles soaked in cream of chicken soup. The raccoon was surprisingly picky, and he refused to eat any canned cat or dog food.
In October 2014, two more animals started hanging out in Eryn’s yard: a pair of stray kittens.
Surprisingly, the kittens got along well with the raccoon, and they always appeared when the raccoon came into the yard. At first, Eryn thought the kittens followed the raccoon since they knew Eryn would bring food out for him. But then, she realized it was more than that. The kittens seemed to be protecting the raccoon.
One morning in November 2014, the raccoon came for breakfast as usual. But this time, the kittens walked with him and acted like his bodyguards!
When Eryn saw the three animals, she quickly grabbed her camera and hit ‘record.’ She caught amazing footage of the kittens and raccoon interacting.
The kittens walked on either side of the raccoon, making sure that he was okay. They followed him all the way into the woods, keeping a close eye on him.
In December 2014, Eryn officially adopted the two black kittens.
She housetrained them and got them fixed and microchipped. They quickly adjusted to living in a house, and they loved spending time with Eryn and her other cat, Squirt. They also still got to see their raccoon friend!
In 2017, Eryn posted an update in the description of her YouTube video.
She said that the raccoon sadly passed away in June 2015. He lived at least five years, far longer than the average raccoon lifespan of one to three years.
The two kittens are now adult cats, and they happily spend their time relaxing in Eryn’s house. She often shares photos of the two cats on her Instagram page.
Thanks to Eryn’s care and the help of his kitten bodyguards, the blind raccoon was able to live a good, long life. Check out the video of the raccoon and his bodyguards below!
