All dogs are deserving of love! While some dogs may find it easy to get adopted from the shelters (namely the famous breeds and puppies), lots of other dogs still need homes! Sadly, it’s the disabled and senior dogs who need homes to most but are the least likely to get them.
One adorable dog had been in the shelter for over 6 years!
Being in a shelter for any amount of time isn’t preferable – dogs need families and homes! While most shelters are temporary stops for dogs, they can sometimes turn into long-term homes and the dog can’t find a family to leave with.
The dog was so excited anytime that someone came near her door she would spin in circles as fast as she could!
If you’ve ever seen a dog with zoomies, imagine that but only in a circle! Since the dog had been in a shelter for so long, it had never learned how to run around in an open area. On top of that, the dog was blind and needed assistance if she was ever going to be adopted.
When the shelter noticed how lovable and caring little Vickie (her pre-shelter name), they knew that it was time to find her a forever home.
She had the best personality so they started reaching out to anyone they knew. Ellen and Honora are a mother-daughter duo who happened to be volunteering in the shelter one day when they first encountered Vickie as she was being taken out for a walk.
Honora, the daughter, knew that they couldn’t just leave her!
With tears in her eyes, Honora asked her mom what they could do. Soon, they were at the shelter almost every day to see Vickie! As their relationship bloomed, they started teaching her some basic dog manners and some simple commands, too!
She had never been in a home before so it took some time but she was an incredible learner!
With regular attention, little Vickie flourished. Getting love brought out her goofy side and brought out her true colors! Within a few months, it was finally time to make the move – Ellen wanted to adopt Vickie!
When she told the shelter, they were ecstatic and they knew that it was already a perfect match.
“You’re going to say goodbye to this place, you never have to come back!”
The emotional moment had the volunteer who took care of her, Elijah, in tears!
Adapting to home life was going to take some time but it was all happening with grace and love. After her first time walking up a flight of stairs, there wasn’t anything Vickie couldn’t accomplish! Now, she gets regular walks and has a family who is SO excited to provide for her every need.
In her new home, Vickie has been given a new life and a love she couldn’t have dreamed of as a shelter dog!
It’s stories like these that remind us that dogs need love, just like we do. Sometimes, a little volunteering can turn into a lifelong friend!
