Animals are sadly abandoned for a multitude of different reasons, but with options to take your unwanted pet to a shelter or try and re-home them yourself, there really is no excuse for leaving a poor defenseless animal out on the streets. So whenever we come across stories of animals who have been abandoned, we’re always relieved when we see that there’s a happy ending in store.
This next story features just that – a poor senior dog who was left out on the streets with only a note tied to his leash after his owner passed away. But luckily, he was found by the right person and ended up being adopted not long after.
When Richmond Animal Care and Control received a call reporting a dog who was tied to a pole and appeared to be abandoned, they headed straight over to provide help.
They arrived at the location and found a sorry sight – the Schnauzer-Poodle mix was tied up on the hot street corner and appeared to be very distressed. Looking closer, the team found a heartbreaking note tied to the dog’s leash.
“My name is Oreo. I’m over 10 years old. I have anxiety. My owner died. I’m really good. I need a home.”
For whatever reason, the people who had written the note hadn’t been willing to take little Oreo on for themselves and had decided that leaving him out on the street was their only option.
The senior dog was very frightened and confused, so the rescue team worked quickly to take him to RACC for a check over. Here, Oreo soon began to calm down as he realized that these people were here to help him.
And there was good news in store! Apart from being blind and deaf, the vets found that Oreo was in perfect health. Now he just needed a home where he could be given lots of love.
The sad reality is that many senior dogs are mostly avoided by potential adopters at the shelters.
People often gravitate more towards the younger dogs due to a fear of paying high vets bills or losing their dog after only a few years of having them. These are perfectly valid reasons, but it breaks our hearts to think of all the elderly pups living their last few years in the shelters, so it’s always nice when people decide to take them in.
Amazingly, Oreo was one of the lucky ones. Not long after he arrived at the shelter, a woman from Fredericksburg fell in love with the pup, and she knew instantly that she wanted to take him home with her. She made Oreo an offer he couldn’t refuse – five acres of land to run around in and his own dog sibling!
We’re so glad that Oreo was able to get his happy ending. No dog deserves to be abandoned no matter what the reason, and we’re glad that that experience is now long behind him.
