Birds are known as some of the smartest creatures in the world. People keep them as pets for precisely this reason – they love to hear them talk! There are a few species of birds in the world that are able to talk well enough to sound like a human. Parrots are the most popular and have their place in pop culture as the shoulder-riding companion to pirates.
What allows birds to communicate in human words?
There has been some research in what allows a bird to use human words. Erich Jarvis is a neuroscientist at Duke University and understands how birds think! He says:
Any bird that’s a vocal learner has a part of the brain devoted to this, called the ‘song system.’ But in parrots, the song system has two layers—an inner ‘core,’ common to all avian vocal learners, and an outer ‘shell,’ which is unique to parrots.
Maybe calling someone ‘bird-brained’ isn’t an insult after all!
Even with their brain’s capacity to talk, there is something else that is needed.
It turns out that parrots do it to try and fit in! In the wild, parrots and other vocal birds talk and communicate using the sounds around them. It is all one big play to try and get in, making sure they aren’t the odd bird out. With a brain that can talk, the vocal cords to make an array of sounds, and the social drive to do so, we get birds that talk to us!
Knowing all the science doesn’t make this video any less funny!
Knowing how something happens doesn’t always take the fun out of it. This video is a perfect example of that! A little bird has a special laugh that you would never expect to come from its little body.
The video opens up on a little green bird strutting around the floor.
After a few seconds, we see the bird come through the door start to walk around like he owns the place. Listening carefully, you can slowly start to hear what makes this bird so funny. Letting out a low chuckle, this bird laughs like a human!
Getting louder, the green bird lets out some more laughs that sound like a villain!
Part of any good villain repertoire is a villainous laugh. They can use it to intimidate and scare the hero in question! This parrot has one of the best villainous laughs that you will ever hear! Laughing like his plan to conquer the world just came to fruition, the little guy sounds totally evil.
With what we know about birds, he must be hearing this from somewhere.
While it is somewhat possible that this bird is an evil genius who is going to conquer the world, it isn’t certain. It may cast a shadow of doubt onto his owner, however! Maybe his owner is the one who has an evil plan and sometimes lets his laugh out. Another option is that his owner is a pirate.
While the most likely option is that it heard it on TV, it is still funny.
Listening to this bird laugh is a wonderful way to cheer you up! Who knows – maybe that was his evil plan all along.
