Unlike the fluffy stuffed toy bears that children love to call “Teddy”, actual real-life bears are not as cute or cuddly.
Their size, for one, is enormous. If they stand on their hind legs, an average male adult bear can stand up to two to three meters and can weigh around 300 to 700 kilograms! That kind of size is not cute at all!
Bears are not also known to be very friendly with humans, but this norm is about to be broken by a couple of bears who are not just tame around people but are definitely friendly, too!
In a video uploaded in the Orphaned Wildlife Center channel on YouTube, two bears can be seen as they are following a man around and giving him a sniff.
Jim, the man who was in the footage, walked around the bears’ cage while the pair of them followed him around. They were keeping him close and so, Jim returned their affection by patting them and scratching their backs.
The bears seemed to love this and went even closer to the man. One of the bears was even licking the guy’s shoe, a sign that he’s happy to be around him.
As it turned out, the bears were sniffing Jim because they were making sure he hasn’t been with other bears! Quite clingy and possessive, huh?
Both bears were being meticulous and really sniffed Jim from head to toe. They are definitely detailed!
There are actually various types of bears. Some of the most popular types are brown bears, black bears, pandas, and polar bears. Though they usually walk on all fours, they can also walk using only their hind legs. They can even sit just like how humans do.
Most bears are diurnal. They are active during the daytime and are asleep at night time. While some wild animals are more accustomed to living in packs, bears are considered to be more solitary. They are what we call “asocial” and they are known to live in isolation, rather than living with their kind.
Bears have an acute sense of smell which they use in finding food, sending enemies and crossing paths with potential mates as well as recognizing their cubs. This ability, combined with their huge size and overwhelming strength helps bears in surviving in the wild, even when they are isolated from other bears.
Although bears are mostly known for being aloof with humans and to other species, the bears in the video showed that they are friendly and that they welcome the attention of Jim. Their constant sniffing is definitely a sign that they are friendly and that Jim is someone they trust.
Seeing these enormous mammals interact with a man in this sweet and caring way surely gives a smile on our faces. It’s just a really refreshing moment that encourages everyone to be more aware that even wild animals such as bears are capable of being friendly to humans.
