Life is about countless chances. It’s up to us to make do with the opportunities presented to us, make the right decisions and go from there. Our furry friends though aren’t always as lucky. Many of them end up in loving homes where they are cared for and fed to their heart’s content. And rightfully so. It’s where they belong.
But there are those who aren’t so fortunate. There are also ones who never find a home and are forced to live on the streets. They survive on instinct alone.
One such dog is Benji.
This poor boy spent his whole life without a home. He wandered the streets for food, sleeping anywhere he felt safe, all while trying to just make it to another day. It was a kind, concerned soul that helped get this dog off the streets.
Hope for Paws received a call about a dog who was living on the streets. They were also warned he wouldn’t let anyone near him. But really, can you blame this dog?
So the rescuers drove to where Benji was spotted and they find him underneath a black SUV. He starts walking away, passing underneath parked cars but as soon as the rescuers walked towards him, Benji ran away. Poor boy.
He fled to a busy intersection.
These guys are really fit, running a considerable distance after a scared dog who found himself in a small alley way. They close the gate and with a catch pole, are able to capture Benji when he tried to run off again.
Benji went wild, barking in panic. He was obviously terrified and mad at the same time. He’s never known humans, never felt love so naturally, he was so scared with what was going on.
The man who caught Benji went on to talk to the dog, assuring him with a gentle voice that it was going to be okay. This guy is really good!
You can see Benji biting the pole, snarling and thrashing about in panic. It’s okay, Benji!
This dog has never had a loving touch so it was difficult for the rescuers to hold him and calm him down. It took some time but Benji finally sat down, breathing heavily while still snarling here and there. He must be so exhausted.
His coat was a mess.
They were finally able to hold him, and as they stroked his head, you can see Benji’s face relax. His eyes more gentle now. Perhaps the first time it became that way. You’re not crying. Are you?
They drive back to the shelter with Benji on the front seat. He gets his dirty coat shaved off revealing a handsome looking boy with such amazing eyes that seem to just want to melt hearts.
He finally gets his first shower!
Is he enjoying that shower or what? Benji is slowly transforming into a totally different dog. And all it took was some effort from a few good people. He gets toweled off, dried, and for the first time in his life, a hug.
A really long, heartfelt hug meant to soothe and heal his soul from all those years of loneliness and fear. From all those years of running away, from all those moments where he almost never made it, Benji finally feels LOVE.
It took more than ten days before Benji was back on his feet.
It tells you how utterly exhausted his spirit was from his former life. He spent those days in bed, eating here and there until he made some new friends.
Two dogs, Lola and Frankie, took it upon themselves to befriend Benji and sort of show him the ropes of how to “dog”. And slowly but surely, Benji began to play around, smiling and finally revealing his true colors. Wonderful!
At the end of the day, Benji is a dog. Full of love, energy, and spirit and he does not shy away from finally being who he really is. Look at him run around and play! He loves to swim too. You’re home, Benji!
