Having an exotic pet comes with its own host of challenges – and also a special brand of cuteness! While everyone knows what it’s like to have a dog or cat, few know the joy of having a beaver waddle up next to you and want cuddles!
Most people are aware of the more common exotic pets.
Some of our friends may have snakes, scorpions, or hedgehogs, but few of them have beavers! While there may be a good reason for this, as we’ll find out later, it doesn’t stop them from being so “dammed” cute.
If you have ever wondered what it would be like to keep one in the house as a pet, look no further!
This is Beave! Beave is a neighborhood rescue beaver that has been hanging out with his new friends, Nancy. Nancy is a wildlife rehabilitation specialist that took the little fellow in when he was just a small beaver.
Beave was taken in when he was only 3 weeks old.
In May 2020, Beave was taken in by rescuers when he was found on the side of the road. Since beavers usually keep their babies near, his parents were likely killed. The most likely scenario is that poachers took his parents and abandoned him when they found him.
As he has gotten used to his new home, he has started taking some… liberties.
Beavers are unique in the fact that they learn EVERYTHING from their parents. Nancy’s house has been home to quite the array of animals, but none of them are like a beaver! Most animals require food, shelter, and medical care – beavers require time and attention!
Beavers stay with their parents for 2 years.
Since they learn so much from their parents, they stay with them for a long time! On average, beavers spend 2 years with their parents before ever venturing out on their own. For now, it looks like Beave is going to be hanging out for a while!
What to do in the meantime?
In the meantime, Beave is learning a ton. The first thing he had to learn was how to eat solid food. After being fed on milk, Nancy had to sit with him and pretend to eat vegetables, just so he would see how to do it! Finally, Beave picked it up and understood what to do.
Something funny just started happening.
Beavers are known for their signature construction habits, namely, dams! Beave has started experimenting with building dams, and the results are hilariously cute. The little fella has started to make dams with household objects but hasn’t moved on to water yet.
“Beave is just starting to dam with household objects, but has not yet started outside or in water,” elaborated Nancy. “He dams pretty much every evening. When I clean it up, he just rebuilds!”
Anything around the house is a potential dam.
Pillows, paper towel rolls, and trashcans are ALL free game for making dams. If you leave anything on the floor, expect a dam soon after! The little moments of construction are hilarious AND cute to watch.
Beave has his own TikTok and has over 370k followers! Check it out below!
