Whether living in bear country or visiting a region where these massive animals thrive, it’s important to know what to do in the event of an attack. The good news is that events like this are rare. But they do happen.
Rare occurrences
According to wildlife experts, only one out of a million black bears attack humans in a predatory fashion. The record for grizzly bears is similar. For that species, only 34 humans sustained some degree of injury in backcountry attacks since 1980.
One man’s story
But as one Swedish man discovered, it’s always better to be prepared…just in case. He uploaded a video showing an unbelievable encounter with a bear. And what happens is so astonishing that it’s now been viewed just under 15 million times.
Gorgeous countryside
At the start of the video, you see the man dressed in a brightly-colored orange and black jacket. He’s in the country with quite a bit of snow on the ground. You notice that’s he’s looking off into the brush…but why?
What is it?
As he continues to walk along a back road, you can tell he spotted something. Then, the camera turns to the tree line. There, you can barely make out a large, dark figure. He knows it’s not something good but at this point, he’s still not sure what it is.
This isn’t good
Then within seconds, he sees it. A large black-colored head and massive paw become visible. It’s what a lot of people fear when in the mountains…it’s a bear. And this isn’t just a tiny cub but a large animal that would easily cause significant harm or worse.
Then it happens
Quickly, the bear comes out of the trees and heads full-speed directly toward the man. This animal wasn’t just curious. He was on a mission, which is clear when watching the video. The bear intended to attack the man.
Feet apart
That’s when the man lets out a huge roar. His voice is deep and angry as the bear gets within two feet of him. But that was enough to startle the animal. Instead of attacking, the bear isn’t sure what to do.
Turning the tables
The man’s booming voice coupled with waving his arms did the trick. Instead of allowing the bear to scare him, he scared the bear. This animal was so frightened by the sound and movement that he immediately rushed back toward the trees.
Out of sight
Just as fast as the bear appeared, he disappeared. Since the video isn’t in English, it’s hard to tell what all the narrator says. But there’s no denying. This was the man’s luckiest day of his life.
Incredible footage
What makes this video so unique is that you get to see the potential attack from two angles. Not only did this man have a camera set up that showed the event unfold from a distance away but he also videoed is on his phone. That’s right, he never stopped filming even as the animal lunged toward him.
