When considering the thought of wild animals in our backyard, most of us take measures to prevent them from returning! Squirrels can cause roof damage, and other animals can transmit rabies, etc. There are plenty of reasons to try and keep the wild “in the wild.”
Of all the wild animals you don’t want in your backyard, which one is the most terrifying?
Without much thought, most of us would say that large dangerous ones (or maybe snakes) are the scariest. Waking up and seeing a bear traipsing around your patio is a good way to not need coffee in the morning!
For one woman, however, having bears in the backyard was a dream come true!
Bertha is a black bear mama with two little cubs that she is raising. She spends her days foraging for food, teaching her cubs how to do things, and generally relaxing. In the warm months, the life of a bear is pretty chill!
Bertha is seen all over the city of Fairview as she meanders around looking for food.
Bears typically have a large area they patrol as they look for food and resources. Bertha is no different and is often spotted by trail cameras (critter cams) while doing her thing. Since she is so often spotted, she earned her name and has become somewhat of a celebrity in the area.
While most of us would be afraid to welcome Bertha into our yards, one woman bucks the trend!
Amy had seen Bertha around town a few times and knew that they were gorgeous animals to be proud of, not afraid. When Amy noticed that the bears would show up in her garden regularly, she decided to start leaving little treats for them!
From rubber balls to bathtubs, the bears never knew what to expect when stepping foot into Amy’s yard!
After setting up some cameras, it became apparent that the toys Amy was leaving out were being put to good use! Whenever she would leave something fun for the bears, they had no qualms about having a romp around the yard.
As the years went on, other bear families came and went, but she always had a special place in her heart for Bertha and her cubs (Darryl and Darryl).
When she saw how much the cubs loved swinging on the hammock she had in the yard, she decided to put up a new one, just for them (another bear had broken her previous one). Whenever the mama bear and cubs would stop by, the hammock became their favorite thing to play on!
Amy captures tons of footage of the bears swinging and falling from the rope hammock she placed in the yard!
The little gesture shows us just how amazing nature can be, especially when we do our best to no disturb it. Amy didn’t try and get rid of the bears like most of us would; she gave them toys! That’s the kind of person we should all strive to be. In the end, she was even rewarded with three new friends.
