Did you know that there is a place, a magical place that cares for baby pandas? This video takes a special glimpse into the world of the Chengdu Panda Base in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. This research and breeding lab is a non-profit that covers 247 acres of “overlapping mountains, clean water, lush trees, and chirping birds.” The grounds houses around 176 Giant Pandas and they have successfully bred 261 pandas since it’s inception in the 1980s.
The Panda Base not only offers scientific study and research but also offers Panda tourism. They receive around 3.5 million visitors yearly from around the world. One of the main attractions is the nursery.
Step inside one of the two delivery rooms located on the property. One is called the Sun and the other the Moon, due to the shape of the buildings. In this video, we can take a look through the glass at the newborn baby pandas sleeping in the big crib. Their nurse comes in and moves them around gently as they sleep.
The nurse lines them up next to each other so we can all get a better view of these adorable fluffy bundles of newborn panda joy. They stretch as they drift in and out of sleep.
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is one of China’s national treasures. It was designed to help with the dwindling panda population. They started in the 1980s when they rescued six sick and hungry pandas. They don’t capture new wild pandas, but they have successfully bred 172 fetuses.
The facility includes a conservation base, scientific research and breeding base, public education base, and educational tourism base.
The baby panda nursery is where you can watch the brand new additions play and wrestle and sleep. These little tikes are a real miracle in the world. Panda’s have a reproductive rate of about one baby every two years. The female panda becomes fertile for only two to three days a year. And to make it even more difficult, once pandas are captivity they seem to lose interest in mating.
The Chengdu Panda Base has put all of this into play when they designed the structures and environment inside the facility. Making the landscape as appealing to the panda as possible. It is a real nature sanctuary and they have had some success in the field of panda breeding.

It’s funny to think the pandas can be used to keep those floors super clean, as the baby panda’s caretaker demonstrates by moving them across the bottom of the crib.
If you think the regular old black and white panda is adorable have you seen the red panda? The Chengdu Panda Base also works to help the endangered red panda.
Although not closely related to the giant panda, the red panda does share its name. About the size of a house cat, but with a longer and heavier body, the red panda is also known as a red bear-cat or a red cat-bear.
