Losing a parent can be scary when you’re only little. In fact, we’re still traumatized from one time in our childhood that we lost our parents for a good few minutes in a supermarket. You get that horrible feeling that you’re never going to see them again. So our hearts go out to animals in the wild who become separated from their parents, especially when the reality is that they might not see them again.
Heartbreakingly, in most cases, a baby animal simply cannot survive by itself in the wild. Babies are small and weak, and often they do not know how to fend for themselves and become a very vulnerable target for predators.
So when a baby otter became separated from his family, he was extremely lucky that a rescue team stepped in to help. Thanks to them, his story has a happy ending!
The sweet video of the otter’s journey was shared onto YouTube by The Dodo, and it already has over 230,000 views. The clip begins with the poor baby otter searching frantically around a muddy area in the hopes of finding his family. They left hours ago, and impatient for them to return, the little guy sets off on his own adventure to try and find them.
However, the further he travels from his home, the more frightened and confused he becomes. The world looks so big and scary to him and he just wants his mom. He starts to worry that he’s never going to see her or his family again.
After a while, the otter becomes tired. He wants to go to sleep, but he knows that without the safety of his family surrounding him, sleeping with be a very dangerous thing to do. Time is running out for this poor little guy, and he continues to search the area, he can’t help yawing a few times!
It’s time for help to step in.
Luckily, a local rescue team is on hand to save the baby otter. They take him to their veterinary center and check him over to see if he’s okay, before feeding him a bottle of delicious milk.
Now it’s time for the difficult part. The rescue team’s mission is now to find the otter’s family so that they can be reunited!
It’s a long and difficult process. The team goes back to the baby’s home, but the area is quiet, and nobody knows if the otter’s family are going to reappear.
But then suddenly, some signs of life emerge.
The otter’s family have returned! The team immediately let the baby out of his box, making sure to keep a distance away from the otter family so they don’t accidentally scare them away. But the poor little guy hasn’t spotted his family, and now that he’s alone in the world again, he immediately starts to cry.
Amazingly, the family of otters hears their baby’s cry from the other side of the beach, and they immediately begin to make their way over to the little guy.
As soon as they meet each other, it’s clear to see just how happy these sweet little creatures are to be reunited. The little guy sniffs each member of his family before his mama picks him up by the scruff of the neck and carries him away, as if to say, “you’re not going anywhere now!”
It turns out there are a lot more babies in this group of otters. They head off together as a family, with mama keeping a good hold on her son!
We’re so grateful for the rescue team for reuniting this beautiful family, and we hope that they manage to stick together in the future.
