You’ve heard hilarious and heartwarming stories of cats and dogs learning to coexist peacefully under one roof, but have you ever wondered what it’s like when these pets are paired with animals you wouldn’t typically adopt for your home? Luna isn’t someone who shows up in an animal shelter or waltzes confusedly into someone’s yard.
Luna is a miniature horse.
You’ll love reading up on these adorable creatures if you haven’t seen a miniature horse before. At the sight of one, you won’t be able to resist gushing and wanting a closer look. But there’s a lot more to these horses than their delightful appearance. A horse to be considered miniature would first have to be shorter than 3 feet tall – an attribute that will probably remind you of toddlers and how fun homes are with them around!
You’ll also get attached once you meet one, and it’s nice to know that they can live up to one-third longer compared to the average horse. They live longer but eat less and stay on the typical grass-hay-grain diet.
There’s so much more to miniature horses than meets the eye, and this story proves it. Luna’s human mama recalls how it all began – on a sad note but with an opportunity to give the horse a better life. She told The Dodo:
“Shortly after Luna was born, her mother rejected her in such a way that it became dangerous for her. And we had no choice but to remove her from her mother.”
The answer was evident the minute the vet proclaimed Luna as an orphan. They carried her inside the house and decided they’d take good care of her.
“She immediately became part of the family. My day revolved around Luna. She was a bottle baby, so I would get up in the morning, give her a bottle and I would take her in the front yard and just let her and Cooper run and play.”
Luna had gotten so used to being around dogs that it seems she thinks of herself as one, too! Because of this, the family had to somehow train her back to being a horse. How adorably clueless this miniature horse is! More than the ‘training’ and the daily routine of feeding her and letting her play with her canine buddies, Luna also got used to tagging along on errands with her human mom. All she needed for each trip was a bottle.
It was such a happy, chaotic household with Luna and the dogs. We’re sure it can get messy and loud but isn’t that all part of the experience? From playing outdoors daily to sharing beds, they got along perfectly and brought everyone so much love and laughter.
You’ll enjoy watching these clips of Luna slowly getting used to her new life. Who would’ve thought a miniature horse would adapt nicely to a loving yet unconventional day-to-day routine?
