When Dublin was hit by a powerful snowstorm at the beginning of March 2018, everyone was shocked. The Irish city rarely gets snowstorms—they usually only get a few inches of snow each year. Because of that, everyone was caught by surprise by the blizzard.

It wasn’t just Dublin’s human residents who were surprised by the snowstorm. The animals who live in the city also weren’t prepared for so much snow. This includes a tiny, baby hare who got stranded outside during the snowstorm.

The baby hare was spotted just outside Dublin Airport. After the blizzard, an airport police officer was surveying the area around the airport, checking for damage from the storm. As he walked up to one of the snowdrifts, he noticed something brown nestled in the white snow. He got closer and realized the brown spot was a little hare.

When the hare saw the police officer, she didn’t hop away.

She seemed to know that the police officer wanted to help her. And so, she stayed completely still and let the police officer pick her up. The hare was so small, it fit into the palm of the police officer’s hand.

The police officer brought her into a small room in the airport, where he warmed her up and fed her. Soon, the little hare was happily jumping around. The police officer brought his K9 partner, Lou, to visit the hare. The pup wasn’t sure what to make of the little animal!

Dublin Airport released a Facebook video of the hare’s rescue, and it was quickly shared hundreds of times. Everyone on Facebook loved seeing the police officer take time out of his day to save a tiny, helpless creature.

The airport released a statement with the video that talked about the rescue. The statement also revealed that the hare had a new name:

“We had a special rescue this morning by one of our Airport Police officers.

This little baby hare was taken to safety and given food and much-needed heat.

We’re happy to report that she’s safe and well and is now being looked after by the family of our colleague who found her. They have named her Emma – sure what else would you call her.”

Many people on Facebook asked what the airport was going to do with the hare.

In response, the airport released a statement saying that the hare was going to a great new home:

“Hareport News: In response to the many queries that we’ve received in relation to her status, we’re delighted to report that hare Emma continues to thrive.

Specialist advice has been received on her care and she is gaining weight. She is a native Irish Hare, which is a protected species.

Emma remains blissfully unaware of her global fame.”

Dublin Airport also shared an adorable video of Emma enjoying a bottle of milk, which everyone loved.

When little Emma got stuck in a snowbank, she must have been terrified. But thankfully, Emma put her trust in a kind human who made sure that she got the care she needed. This tiny hare has a great life ahead of her!
