It’s not always easy to know what to do in difficult situations that force you to make quick and instinctual decisions. Sometimes we shy away from the challenge, and other times we feel compelled to do our best in order to help others.

As human beings, we are provided with skills that do not pertain to our furry friends. Animals often get themselves into dangerous situations and need our help, even if they are reluctant to accept it or unable to communicate it.

This is what happened when two Australian hikers encountered a lost dog in the middle of the woods.

Well into their journey through Australia’s Mt. Glorious National Park, the two hikers came across a female dog stranded on a creek bed. They were miles away from anywhere but felt determined to rescue this desperate pup.

They named her Miss Piggy and decided to devise a plan to get her to safety.

They approached her as carefully as possible, after all – dogs aren’t the most predictable creatures and tend to react unpredictably when they are scared. As they got closer, she ran and hid under some tree branches.

Soon enough, they built up trust with her and she warmed up to them. They noticed that she was too tired to walk back with them. Still, they were determined to help so they re-devised their plan to get her back to their cars.

Miss Piggy was a heavy pup of around 90 pounds which meant that they had a real challenge on their hands. They made a pouch for her out of a bag they had and attached it to a stick so they could equally share her full weight.

The trek back took over 45 minutes and the two were exhausted. Miss Piggy was palpably grateful and happy to be safe again.

It was then discovered that Miss Piggy’s real name was, in fact, Bobby and she had escaped from her home 3 weeks ago which was 10 miles away.

Her rescuers could have easily decided to ignore the situation and continue on their hike. If they did, who knows if the adorable pup would have ever made it home? It was their determination and decency that meant that she is now safe and sound at home with her owner.
