Summers in Texas can get extremely hot, and both people and animals will do everything they can to get relief from the heat. On one particularly warm day in July 2018, an armadillo desperately needed to cool down.

The armadillo decided to spend the afternoon hanging out in a swimming pool.

The swimming pool belonged to Kristy West. West and her family were off on a beach vacation, so they had no idea about the little visitor in their pool. They didn’t learn about it until West’s sister-in-law went over to her house to check up on things.

West’s sister-in-law was shocked to see the little armadillo in the pool, and she quickly snapped some photos to share with West.

“My daughter came running out in the water with the phone, so I thought something was wrong,” West told The Dodo. “Then she showed me the pictures. I was shocked, but thought it was amazing and hilarious. We had a very good laugh about it.”

West and her sister-in-law decided it would be best to take the armadillo out of the pool—they didn’t want him to get stuck in the water. West’s sister-in-law pulled the little armadillo out of the pool, and she escorted him back onto West’s lawn.

The armadillo curled up in the shade under the deck and took a well-deserved nap.

If the armadillo shows up again, West says she’s okay with letting him stay in the pool.

“I would probably just let him chill and see if he could manage to get out on his own,” she said. “[But] we are still wondering how he managed to get on the float like that.”

Many people are surprised to learn that armadillos are actually very good swimmers.

Armadillo love swimming in creeks and ponds on hot days. Since armadillos usually live in places with hot climates, it’s a great way for them to cool off!

If the armadillo goes into West’s pool again, she won’t have to worry. As these videos show, the armadillo should be able to get himself out!
