Although we tend to think of dogs and cats as the typical rescue pets, there are all sorts of animals that get rescued every day. For animals brought up in the farming industry, we don’t often think of them as rescue-worthy, but one woman and one chicken want to prove that wrong.
Boo the chicken was supposed to be killed for meat.
He is a Cornish Chicken, a breed known for their muscular body type which makes them really good for meat production. Cornish Chickens are often raised for meat, and there is a misconception that these chickens have a short lifespan so it doesn’t matter if they are killed for meat.
The woman who rescued Boo wanted to save him from what was sure to be a bad ending.
Cornish Chickens are often killed at 6 weeks old. His owner was inspired to save him because she knew about the conditions of his life. She says:
“Boo had a pretty sad life before we found him, and he developed a heart condition due to stress and lack of care. We have a really great avian vet though, who was able to find the problem and a solution to it.”
Because of this woman’s decision to take Boo in, his life got totally turned around and improved.
Now Boo lives in a house, and he has a lot of freedom to explore and live a happy life.
His owner notes that he is surprisingly cuddly, and will often choose to stay in her arms for hours on end. Boo and his owner are pretty attached to each other, and he even waits for her outside the bathroom!
Boo has some favorite activities though. His favorite things to do are taking walks in a stroller, going on road trips, and taking any car rides. He never would have been able to experience all this if he hadn’t been rescued.
He’s gone on some pretty cool adventures.
You probably don’t imagine a chicken enjoying the beach, but Boo has waded in the water, and he’s going back soon! He’s also gone to important monuments, like the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.
Although there are rules explicitly banning dogs from going to the memorial, there is nothing that mentions chickens.
Boo also “plays” music — although his technique looks a lot like trying to pick at food.
If you put a keyboard or a guitar down on the ground near him, Boo will try it out.
He’s a pretty curious guy and it pays off.
In this way, Boo manages to create songs, either by plucking at guitar strings or pecking at the keyboard keys. It’s pretty cool to watch and shows that animals are curious and capable of way more than we give them credit for.
Because Boo got a second shot at life, we get to learn about chickens in a whole new light.
It’s incredible that Boo’s owner took him in when he needed a chance. And now that she documents all of their adventures on Instagram, I am viewing chickens in a new way. These little guys need some love too and it’s great that Boo gets to have a long, fulfilling life now!
