Eager to welcome Kong into his life, Hartsell completed the adoption paperwork.
Following a series of interviews and a home visit, his application was approved.
In a touching tribute during the adoption process, Hartsell decided to rename Kong to ZIB, after a famous Soviet space dog, symbolizing a new journey to the stars for both of them.
The day Hartsell went to collect ZIB from his foster home was captured in a remarkable photograph by a friend.
This moment was magical, as Hartsell recounted to The Dodo, “I was handed his leash … I got down in front of him and gave him his new name and asked if he wanted to come home with me,” leading to an unforgettable embrace that sealed their bond.
