The story of a young pup named Kai has made the national news in the United Kingdom after the poor dog was found abandoned at a railway station in Scotland, just after Christmas.

Kai was tied up so he couldn’t run away, and also had a suitcase full of his belongings with him.

With no one to care for him, the pup was completely helpless. Luckily, it didn’t take long before the Scottish SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was able to find him and take him in, at least temporarily. His suitcase had a pillow, a couple of toys, some food, and a water bowl.

They then realized that the four-footer had a severe medical condition, and it’s suspected that Kai was physically abused by his previous owner. He was microchipped, which is how they figured out his name and some other information.

Not all the mysteries had been solved, however, because people were still trying to figure out who abandoned the pup at the train station. Abandoning pets is a crime in Scotland.

Pictures of Kai went viral in the whole country.

The information from the microchip only leads to a previous owner of Kai, who sold him back in 2013. He had no idea what happened to the pup after he sold him and had no contact information of the buyer.

Even though the details still remain scarce to this day, it appears that this buyer then tried to sell the dog to a woman on second-hand website Gumtree years later. He met up with the woman at Ayr Station with an asking price of 400 pounds, but the whole internet sale quickly went sideways.

The picture on the website wasn’t Kai at all, and the woman clearly noticed. She was already suspicious at this point and asked to take him on a walk first.

“I went to Ayr to buy the dog,” she said to Daily Record.”

“The guy rushed out with a food chest and lead on the dog. But I could see there was something up because he was very skinny.”

“I said I wanted to take the dog for a walk, so he asked me for £150 as a deposit in case I didn’t come back. Then I saw him tearing off in his car. I phoned and said ‘You better come back for your dog’. He never turned up.”

The woman had no idea what to do and started panicking. To make things even worse, she had to go home to her daughter quickly because she suffers from asthma and the last train to their home city of Aberdeen was about to embark.

She then left the pup behind after tying him up somewhere, next to his suitcase with his favorite belongings. Reportedly, she told a staff member of the train station that it wasn’t her dog and then left.

The Sharpei mix was in urgent need of surgery because his eyelids were curling inwards.

With a surgery cost of well over a thousand pounds, the rescuers weren’t sure how to pay for it at first. However, the SPCA could count on the community and people from all over the world to fund the surgery. In just 24 hours, kind and generous strangers donated a total of more than 2,500 British pounds.

Thanks to the overwhelming support, the surgery could proceed.

The operation went well, and Kai was finally starting to get back in shape and healthy again. His popularity across the nation was astonishing – according to the SPCA, over one hundred people called to offer Kai a loving and warm home and adopt him. People compared him to Paddington Bear, a fictional character who shares a similar story, as he too was left behind.

The rescuers ultimately decided to go with 52-year-old Ian Russell, who works as a hydraulic engineer. After his dalmatian passed away just before Christmas, there was a void in the house that Kai would be able to fill.

“My Dalmatian named Mica passed away just before Christmas and I was left heartbroken. I had her for 15 years and she was the apple of my eye. We pretty much spent 24 hours a day together.”

“When I heard about Kai I knew the little guy needed a break but I never thought in a million years I’d get him. I called the Scottish SPCA just to check he was okay and see if there was anything I could do to help. Fast forward a few weeks and here I am taking him home. I honestly think it was meant to be.”

“It feels like fate that I’ve been able to rehome Kai and I’m not usually a believer in things like that. I’m over the moon and very shocked that I was chosen out of everyone who wanted him.”

Ian and Kai are an absolutely perfect match.

You can just instantly see that these two already share a special bond. The two are really looking forward to spending some quality time together, and everyone was reassured that Kai would be taken care of, completely safe and would receive all the attention and love he deserves.
