Shane spent the beginning half of his life as a workhorse.
Not only did was this beautiful creature worked all day long, but he did so in harsh conditions while being mistreated.
When Shane was rescued by Colby’s Crew Rescue, they found him to be extremely skinny for a horse of his size.
His hooves had grown so long that he couldn’t walk properly.
They were described to be “just like flippers,” which caused him to have to walk on them tenderly.
This poor horse could barely even walk. Thankfully, the folks at Colby’s Crew Rescue saved Shane from the kill pen as soon as they could.
They realized that the 10-year-old horse had much life left in him, they just needed to fix those feet of his.
His hooves were in such bad condition that this poor horse could barely lift them.
Even just picking one up to be groomed was painful. But he made it through his first trim and the results were incredible.
You could immediately see that he was able to walk better the minute he stepped outside to test out his new feet.
Seeing him run again for the first time was something that brought tears to the rescue crew’s eyes.
And Shane sure was excited about it and happy to be in the hands of people who treated him with love and care.
“He’s probably one of the most grateful horses I’ve ever seen,” said a crew member.
Colby’s Crew Rescue was started in 2020 when Colby was rescued from a Pennsylvania kill pen in August.
The kill pen is where workhorses are taken after they can no longer work.
The rescuers knew that they had to start saving more horses, so they went on to start the Big John initiative, which seeks to make sure no workhorse will be discarded and killed after a life of involuntary servitude.
Colby’s Crew Rescue has saved about 80 horses with 60 to 70 percent of them being ex-workhorses. They also save other beautiful creatures like mules.

“We aim to go for what horse has no other option but to be rescued by us,” the rescue crew said. “A lot of them need to be rehabilitated physically or mentally. They just need time just being loved on and to remember that people can really be nice.”
While the horses are welcome to stay on the rescue organization’s ranch, Colby’s Crew Rescue aims to have their rescues adopted into forever homes.
“It’s very emotional and rewarding to see them come around,” said a rescue crew member. “We have put our hearts and soul into rescuing horses. To look back and see how many horses we’ve saved just makes it all worth it.
