Dog Feels Safe Sleeping In Cardboard Box Waiting To Get Adopted
People worry about adopting a rescue dog because they can't change their past - but, you can give them a future.

When a dog named Captain was brought into the Detroit Dog Rescue shelter, the staff immediately supplied him with a nice, warm, comfy bed to sleep on. Captain, however, wasn’t interested.

The rescued dog would reject every dog bed they brought to him — he only wanted to sleep in a cardboard box.

“All he wants at bedtime is a cardboard box,” Kristina Millman-Rinaldi, founder of Detroit Dog Rescue, wrote on Facebook. “This cardboard box, or whatever size box we have at the time, is the only way he’ll sleep because it’s the only way he’s ever slept to feel safe.”

Of course, Millman-Rinaldi is only assuming that last part because of this peculiar behavior. Captain certainly seemed to be finding some source of comfort with the cardboard box. It was like it was all he had ever known during his life on the streets.

Captain was found wandering the streets of Detroit — he was hungry, sick, and wearing a red collar.

The sweet dog was taken in by Detroit Dog Rescue last November; he is getting rehabilitated and working on both his physical and emotional wounds. Millman-Rinaldi says that he is a really good, sweet boy; he just had a rough start.

He “will do anything for a scoop of peanut butter. He has the best wiggle butt and loves showing off his tricks,” Millman-Rinaldi says. “Despite all he’s been through, he is super sweet.”

Captain’s previous owners were never found, but Detroit Dog Rescue is determined to find him his forever, loving home.

“I can’t change their past. I can’t erase all of those memories, but as a team at Detroit Dog Rescue, we can give them a future,” Millman-Rinaldi wrote on Facebook. “We will keep them safe and cater to their needs … even if it means providing them with endless cardboard boxes to feel safe. We love you and your cardboard boxes, Captain.”

Captain is only 2-years-old and has a long life with lots of love to give. Now — he just needs that forever family that is going to give him the love and affection that he truly deserves. He’s been through so much, and now, he’s ready to know what comfort and safety feel like.
