Could you imagine being surrounded by 3,000 dogs with wagging tails, giving wet, sloppy kisses to you all day long? For some, it may sound like a dream, but for one family – it’s their reality.
Mrs. Hsu’s Sanctuary opened five years ago by one very selfless family in Taiwan. Sadly, the country has an overwhelming abundance of stray dogs and the number of dogs at the Hsu family’s shelter was starting to become hard to manage.
As they started to take in more and more dogs, a Good Samaritan in the community heard about their efforts and donated a large facility to Mrs. Hsu’s sanctuary. With this new facility, the family was able to provide enough space for thousands of dogs in need of rescue and shelter.
Now, 3,000 dogs live at the Hsu Family’s shelter. All of them are hoping to someday find their forever home.
The shelter has now become the largest in Taiwan and one volunteer, named Angel Wang, jumped at the chance to help out. It pained her to see how many homeless dogs were living in and around her community.
Mrs. Hsu’s sanctuary has seen an abundance of stray dogs thanks to a ban that went into effect last February; Taiwan became the first country to ban euthanasia as a form of population control. This is wonderful news, however, the Hsu family and their volunteers had a large task at hand – to find the dogs homes.
Many of the dogs came to the shelter as homeless strays, but others were seriously injured by cars or steel spring traps put out by farmers.
“We have a vet in our shelter, but if the dog has an injury that is too critical, they’re brought to a local animal hospital,” Wang told The Dodo. “We have a number of dogs with missing legs or paralysis in the back legs.”
The rescue shelter has full-time employees, volunteers, and even works with a supporter that builds wheelchairs for dogs with mobility issues. The large facility also boasts a giant grooming room, a sleeping room, and a separate room for rescue cats.
A majority of the dogs spend their days at the park, socializing with one another and getting their exercise.
Wang has been volunteering at Mrs. Hsu’s Sanctuary for four years and loves spending time with all of the animals. In fact, she ended up falling in love with one dog named Huei Huei, and couldn’t resist bringing her home.
The thousands of dogs at Mrs. Hsu’s Sanctuary is certainly astounding, but it’s thanks to the incredible Hsu family, their volunteers, and the communities donations that they are able to care for them and keep them safe.
