When a woman moved into a nursing home, she sadly had to give her thirteen-year-old cat Jamie to an RSPCA Australia shelter.
Jamie didn’t understand why he was in the shelter, and he had a few medical issues that caused him discomfort. The poor cat had cat flu, and he also had kidney issues and bad teeth. The shelter gave him medication for his flu and his kidneys, and they also removed his bad teeth.
Soon, Jamie was feeling better, but the shelter still had a big problem: who would adopt a thirteen-year-old cat?
Thankfully, the right person quickly came along: a woman named Sarah Dempsey. Sarah went to the RSPCA shelter to look for a cat. She hadn’t been planning on adopting a senior cat, but when she saw Jamie, her heart melted.
“When I first met him, he was asleep, but woke up as I bent down to look at him,” Sarah told The Dodo. “He clearly wanted some pats so I stuck my hand through the slot of the enclosure and he head-bumped me and purred. Later the staff let him out to see how he was with me and he was so affectionate.”
Sarah adopted Jamie that day, and the two headed home together. There, Jamie showed how much he already loved his new mom.
Jamie didn’t want to leave Sarah’s side, and he was very affectionate. He would weave around Sarah’s legs as she walked through her apartment, and he constantly meowed and purred at her.
“He won’t leave my side,” Sarah said. “He is extremely affectionate, head-bumping and weaving around my legs. He likes talking to me at night and follows me around my apartment.”
On their first day together, Jamie asked Sarah to hold his paw when he napped.
Sarah happily did as he asked, and Jamie soon fell asleep with his paw in Sarah’s hand. Eventually, Sarah moved her hand, but as soon as she did that, Jamie started meowing. When Sarah put her hand back on Jamie’s paw, he quickly fell back to sleep.
“If I let go he wakes up, meows, and claws my hand back to him,” Sarah said. “I think we’ve bonded already.”
Sarah was amazed to see how quickly Jamie bonded with her.
“I knew he’d rescue me from feeling alone, and I’d do the same for him,” Sarah said.
Sarah now holds Jamie’s paw while he’s napping. Jamie also curls up next to Sarah at night, which Sarah loves!
When Jamie arrived at the RSPCA shelter, he was scared, sick, and unsure why he was alone. But now, the sweet cat has found a great place to call home with a mom who will always hold his paw while he’s sleeping. We’re so glad these two found each other!
