Raina recently gave birth and was living on the streets which made her new role as a parent even harder. The homeless mother decided to take shelter with her puppies behind a home in Detroit.

She dug a little hole to hide her pups in when the rain started to fall.

But soon the rains became heavier and started to flood while dangerous thunder and lightning struck. Those at the Michigan Humane Society found out about Raina and feared for her life.

They were scared that she and her puppies might drown if the flood waters filled up the hole where they were taking shelter. So Michigan Humane Society staffers Chris Ouwerkerk and Pam Dybowski decided to endure the dangerous weather in order to save Raina and her puppies.

The Michigan Humane Society posted a video of the 33-minute long rescue where Ouswerkerk had to reach into the hole and pull out the scared, yelping, and mud-covered puppies one by one.

Luckily, they were all found in good health.

Once they were rested up a bit and given their vaccinations, they were ready to be placed up for adoption so that they could find their forever homes. The story of the dogs’ rescue ended up going viral and was publicized on local news stations. After that, everyone wanted to adopt Raina’s puppies.

The agency received tons of adoption applications. Finally, the adoptive parents were chosen and were called in to accept their puppies by lottery.

“Our rescue workers are out there doing this type of work every single day but at the end of the day, all the work we do is not possible without you. They have to have a home to go to,” one of the agency’s staff member told the crowd of adoptive parents.

And each of the adoptive parents had all types of reasons for wanting to adopt one of the rescue dogs.

“We thought, ‘Oh my God, that poor momma digging the tunnel and those babies coming out,” one woman said.

No one knew what dog they would end up going home with but had specific dogs in mind for a variety of reasons.

Some chose a dog because it was the “chillest” dog there, or because the dog was black and their wife wears black clothing to work and wouldn’t have to lint roll too often, another liked the way one of the dogs got along with the dog they already have.

Regardless of that reason, everyone went home that day with a new best friend. Watch the video of the happy day below.
