Quite a lot of people like having dogs, but not nearly as many people are keen on having fur shed everywhere. That, and space is a constant issue. A dog needs room to run around and not feel cramped up, so people in small apartments and other living spaces can’t be as lenient with their choice of pets as the rest of us.
Thankfully, they’ve got options! Dogs come in all sizes, and all kinds of fur types too. These ones are perfect for anyone seeking a pint-sized pooch with little concern of fur shedding everywhere. The lack (or near lack) of shedding with these breeds is a lifesaver for anyone who hates sweeping, or has allergies.
1. French Bulldog
The French Bulldog is the English Bulldog’s pint-sized, pointy-eared cousin. At just around 13 inches tall and less than 30 pounds, it’s as small as any busy person in a small living space needs it to be. They socialize with families and other pets – which is a must for a lot of people.
In addition, Frenchies are very alert and observant dogs, despite how rarely they bark. This makes for a good watchdog, all in a small package. For one famous example of a French Bulldog, look no further than Gary Fisher – a Frenchie whose mom was the late Carrie Fisher.
2. Shih Tzu
Everyone’s lovable, long-coated, fun-sized dog has its reputation cut out for it. The Shih Tzu is just below 11 inches tall and weighs no more than 16 pounds. Its child-friendly, lovable demeanor is all thanks to the breed’s origins. Shih Tzus were bred to keep people company within royal palaces, but you don’t need a royal palace to keep one happy.
3. Bichon Frise
The Bichon Frise is small, fluffy, hypoallergenic, and easy to take care of. Sitting just under 12 inches tall and 18 pounds, they’re plenty small enough for most city folks. Bichon Frises are also easy to train and make great companions thanks to their super friendly personality. Just note that they’re not the best guard dogs, precisely because they can be a bit too friendly.
4. Pomeranian
Everyone’s seen the Pomeranian, and it hardly needs an introduction. The Spitz Breed that looks like a koosh ball with legs is quite yappy and energetic, but none of that tarnishes its track record as a great indoor companion breed. At just 6-7 inches tall and no heavier than 7 pounds, they can also be carried around quite easily.
5. Pug
Following the Pomeranian on the list of “Tiny breeds that everyone knows and loves”, here comes the Pug. Unlike many dogs in its same size range, the Pug is nowhere near as yappy or loud. They’re an easily manageable breed, though their brachycephalic condition makes them prone to breathing problems. Not only that, but you’ll frequently need to clean their wrinkles with a cotton swab. Keep those in mind if you plan on getting one!
6. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
If you’d rather have a dog that combines fun-sized stature with looking gorgeous, then consider the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel! With its curly coat and cream colors, it’s as pretty as many dogs can get. It’s also small – no more than 13 inches tall. It’s a carry-able 16-18 pounds too, and are fairly low-maintenance on the physical exercise side of things. Nonetheless, regular walks are a must for any dog breed and dog owner!
7. Pembroke Welsh Corgi
The Welsh Corgi packs the demeanor of a big dog, but in the package of a tiny dog. Standing at 12 inches tall and tipping the scales at 30 pounds, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is fairly strong-willed and brave for such a tiny dog. This is in no small part thanks to its cattle-herding breed origins, and this lends itself well to people who want a playful and energetic dog.
8. Dachshund
Not many dogs are as iconic and instantly recognizable in build as the Dachshund. Everyone’s favorite wiener dog, the Dachshund. The miniature Dachshund is especially great for those seeking small breeds, provided you can handle one. The tiny legs on this sausage dog can be quite deceptive, as the breed itself is surprisingly energetic.
9. Chihuahua
Few dogs are as synonymous with “Small dog” as the Chihuahua. Though they are notoriously yappy, people can’t stop loving them, and for good reason. Note that as cute as they may be, this isn’t a breed you can leave as a toy for kids. The Chihuahua is best trained early, but stick with it and you’ll get a very nice city companion weighing no more than 6 pounds.
10. Toy Poodle
It has “Toy” in its name, are you surprised it’s on this list? At just barely 10 inches tall, it’s as “toy” as a poodle can get. The Toy Poodle will also quickly make you realize that not all dogs are the same, and some demand quite a lot more than just a roof and some food. But this itself works splendidly for people who like to treat their dogs like their own children!
Though they may come in small packages, these small dog breeds offer as much variety as their larger brethren. As is always the case, it’s imperative that you make sure to meet all your pet’s needs before you get one. And if you can adopt instead of shop, then you should always do that instead!
