Sometimes people you trust can betray you in ways that are unbelievably cruel.

That’s what happened to Maile Trist after she temporarily entrusted the care of her beloved pooch, Jazzy, to a “friend” who later told her the dog had passed away.

Maile mourned the loss of the senior pup, until she was contacted by the Cowley County Humane Society saying Jazzy had been alive this entire time.

The 11-year-old Chihuahua, who had a microchip, was found wandering around a rock quarry in Cedar Vale, Kansas, a 2 hour drive away.

When Maile was 16 years old, she adopted a senior rescue dog at the San Diego Humane Society. Two years later she started a new full-time job halfway across the country in Salina, Kansas, and was overwhelmed from the move.

She asked a dog-loving couple she befriended in her new hometown to watch over Jazzy until she could get settled in, but it was one of the biggest mistakes of her life.

When Maile was ready to welcome Jazzy back home, the couple watching over her dog ghosted her. They deleted their social media accounts and ignored all her attempts to reach them.

Her determined fiancé tracked down the couple six months later and demanded they hand over the pup, but by then Maile said it was too late.

“They blocked me. I couldn’t contact them and finally, when I did find contact, they told me that she died.”

Of course, it was all a terrible lie.

Maile spent the next year and a half grieving, and felt horrible about not being there for Jazzy’s last moments of life.

“Regretting giving her to those people and feeling so guilty about it, and I’m so glad that I finally got her back.”

Anyone who has ever lost a loved one knows the guilt that sometimes comes with not being there at the end. It’s not something that’s easy to make peace with.

Thankfully, the universe has a way of course-correcting and bringing some good back into the world!

Maile recently received an email from the Cowley County Humane Society informing her that Jazzy was still alive. At first, she was confused, because her dog had supposedly already crossed over the rainbow bridge.

“I was crying and I was shaking because I was so overjoyed that, for one, she’s alive and two, I could bring her finally home.”

The happy reunion was posted to the Cowley County Human Society’s Facebook page – and it’s the most exciting thing ever!

Jazzy immediately recognized her mom, and you can see her cute little tail spinning around like a helicopter blade.

“She’s holding onto me right now. She’s literally gripping my arm.”

Maile wants her story to be a lesson to every pet owner out there: no matter what the cost, get your fur baby microchipped!

“Every single animal has a different name, different microchip number and it makes sure that you and only you get your pet back, and that’s the biggest thing to me.”
