A woman named Melissa was driving through Belize City, Belize one day when she spotted a kitten limping on the side of the highway. Melissa pulled over to get a better look at the injured animal.

When she got closer, Melissa realized the tiny kitten was badly hurt.

His jaw was broken, and the bone was sticking out inside his mouth. Because of that, he wasn’t able to eat, and he was very skinny and weak. He looked a lot like the Lord of the Rings character Sméagol, and so Melissa decided to name him after the character.

Melissa put little Sméagol in her car and started driving to the vet. As she drove, Sméagol began purring, and Melissa’s heart melted. When she got to the vet, he told Melissa that he didn’t have any pins that were small enough to fit in Sméagol’s jaw. The poor kitten wouldn’t be able to eat, and it would be best if they put Sméagol’s down.

Melissa refused to give up on Sméagol. She already loved the little kitty.

“I asked what would happen if we just left it to heal on its own, and the vet said, ‘well how will he eat like that?’ I don’t know why I had a tin of cat food in my purse, but we opened it for him. He just shoved his entire head into the gravy and showed us all that he could very well eat,” Melissa told Express.

The vet gave Melissa antibiotics, and she took Sméagol home with her. The cat quickly settled into Melissa’s house. He loved hanging out with her two dachshunds and four other cats.

Slowly but surely, Sméagol began healing. Soon, his infection had cleared up, and he started gaining weight.

Sméagol’s gum ended up growing over the bone, and he now has a little snaggletooth. But it doesn’t bother Sméagol or Melissa—she thinks it’s adorable!

Sméagol has now been with Melissa for over three years, and the kitty is doing great! He loves eating more than anything, and he’s especially fond of human food.

“He loves eating, and trying to trick humans into feeding him,” Melissa said. “He also likes carrots and other strange things no other cat I’ve had would ever eat.”

Melissa also recently added another cat to her family, a little kitten named Fry Jack. Melissa was originally only planning on fostering him, but Sméagol fell in love with the kitten. When Melissa saw that, she decided to adopt Fry Jack.
