When Kameroun Mares was just 23, she learned that she had acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In the summer of 2013, Kameroun began doing chemotherapy to treat her cancer. Just after Kameroun began doing chemotherapy, she decided to get a dog to help her through the treatments.
Kameroun decided to adopt a sweet Husky puppy. She named him Semper Fidelis, which means ‘always faithful’ in Latin.
Semper lived up to his name—the pup was very faithful to Kameroun, and he loved her more than anything. Kameroun loved him just as much, and the two began spending all of their time together.
In 2016, Kameroun had to travel from her home in Florida to California for more medical treatments. Her roommate said she would watch Semper while she was gone.
One day, Kameroun received a call from her roommate. She said that Semper was missing.
Kameron was worried sick about her beloved pup. When she got back to Florida, she posted fliers everywhere and visited every shelter in her area. Later that year, she had to move back to California, but she kept searching for Semper.
“[I] posted info about him on Facebook, lost dog forums, and pages and groups. Every day I waited for a phone call about someone finding him … His microchip is registered to me since he was 3 months [old] … yet I received nothing. I was worried sick about him, and missed him dearly,” Kameroun told The Dodo.
Kameroun kept searching, but she couldn’t find any trace of Semper. Finally, she decided to hire a private investigator to help her.
The investigator, Ana Campos, figured out why Kameroun couldn’t find Semper even though he was microchipped. Ana learned that a woman had added her name to Semper’s microchip. The woman had then registered this chip to Petkey Pets, and Petkey hadn’t checked if Semper already had a microchip. The woman had then sold Semper on Craigslist for $200.
Ana was able to track down Semper, and she and Kameroun went to court to fight for custody of the dog. The judge ruled in their favor, and he said that Semper should be immediately returned to Kameroun.
A police officer picked up Semper and brought him to Kameroun. The second Semper got out of the police car, his tail started wagging. He ran over to Kameroun and began licking her.
Kameroun couldn’t stop crying as Semper jumped on her. She was so happy to have her best friend back!
“I see him as extension of myself and my heart,” Kameroun said. “I am glad I have him back in my arms.”
Kameroun and Semper are now living in California, and Semper is enjoying exploring his new neighborhood with his mom. Thankfully, Kameroun’s cancer is now in remission.
“He still remembers his commands and tricks that I taught him,” Kameroun said. “My special favorite one is the ‘go home’ command … I tell him, ‘Semper, go home. Where’s home? Go home.'” And Semper finds the exact right doorstep.
