Pets are so special to us but sometimes we take them for granted. It’s easy to forget that things happen to animals all the time to separate them from us. In particularly malevolent times, our beloved pets could be stolen.
If you thought you were never going to see your pet again, how would you feel and act? And then what if you found them again? That’s exactly what happened to one woman in Tennessee, and her reaction to this change of circumstances will remind you to hug your fur baby tonight.
Christine and her Lhasa Apso were more or less attached at the hip.
Christine took her dog, named Sissy, everywhere with her. They had a deep bond, and like many dog parents, Christine feels that her dog helped her get through the hardest challenges of life. Through the grief of losing a son and cancer treatments, her beloved Sissy was with her all the time.
This tiny pup was on a trip through Chattanooga, Tennessee with her human mom when the trouble began. The dog was stolen right out of Christine’s car on their road trip. Christine thought she would never see her again.
For months, Christine grieved the dog she thought she would never find again. Then, an animal rescue happened to pick the right pup off the street.
Kim Meeks, an Animal Control Rescue Officer, scanned the microchip of the dog that had been taken off the street earlier that day. Her office was located in Atlanta, Georgia. Even though it seems far away for Sissy to have traveled, the microchip connected Kim right to Christine.
Through the microchip, Meeks found Christine’s contact information. She was able to call her, and give her news that would turn around her last few months.
Although it was pretty easy for Animal Control to get in touch with Christine, it was more difficult to convince the dog owner that the Lhasa Apso was hers.
Christine had become convinced that she would never see her beloved pet again. She had spent so long without her dog that when she finally got the call from Animal Control, she did not believe what they were telling her.
Kim Meeks describes Christine’s reaction as pure doubt. She told 11 Alive:
“It took me about 5 minutes to convince her that I had her dog. And she kept asking, ‘Well, how did she get there'”
While still not totally believing the news, Christine raced to see if the dog was really hers.
She drove overnight to Georgia to find her dog. It had been nine months since they had last seen each other, and the reunion was a sight to behold.
When they saw one another, Christine made certain that it was her dog, and the tears could not stop flowing. Sissy also needed some convincing that she was finally back with her owner, but once she was certain of the bond, she likewise couldn’t help herself. Soon, Christine was covered with deeply-missed dog kisses.
It’s not just Christine and Sissy who are emotional over this story.
