A woman on Reddit got herself into a very tricky situation after making a decision about someone else’s pet. It was posted in the ever-popular AITA subreddit, where most people browse to see stories like this.
The woman asked Reddit if she was right to put her boyfriend’s dog down without his permission. I suggest you keep reading to see all the details.
Her boyfriend had a 16-year-old dog, whom she loved just as much as he did. Old dogs can prove to be very lovable indeed, which makes it all the more difficult when it’s time to say goodbye. Unfortunately, that goodbye was fast approaching. That’s what created this messy situation that the woman found herself in.
“This dog was an absolute gift to the world and I loved them unconditionally. They were 16 though and had countless medical problems (rotated front legs which prevented them from getting up, jumping up, being moved, just completely unable to walk among other things). This dog was in CONSTANT agony. Every time the dog tried to get up he would be screaming in pain. There’s nothing the vets can do.” – she explained
Suffering is not something anyone wants to witness, especially when you know it can be helped. When the vets advised her to have the dog put down, she considered it immediately.
She had reasoned that her boyfriend’s refusal to put the dog down could be categorized as abuse.
He was knowingly letting the dog live a life of suffering, fully aware that there was nothing else to do. It’s a pretty fair point.
Though does that justify the course of action she took? That’s another question.
When her boyfriend was out with friends, she had called him to let him know she was putting the dog down. She wasn’t asking for permission, she was just letting him know. As we’ll see later, he didn’t like this one bit.
The woman finally had the dog put down in her boyfriend’s home, with his family present.
At least it was surrounded by people it knew. It’s also worth speculating that the family seems to have sided with her on this one.
“I was sick of watching my boyfriend dismiss the pain this dog was obviously in; he ignored vets telling him to get this dog put down because it was borderline abuse keeping him alive.” – she said in justification
I can imagine she did what she felt was best, but was she in the right to do it? The responses to her post don’t really all agree.
The overwhelming response was “ESH” (Everyone sucks here).
In other words, it’s hard to blame her, but it’s also hard to justify her solution. The comments were pretty divided on it too.
“ESH. He should have done something but you can’t really just put down other people’s pets when they go out for the night.” – said u/Corgiboop
Meanwhile, u/Doodledandygal said “it wasn’t your place to make that decision”
As for OP, she was kicked out of the home she was renting with her boyfriend and is now living with her dad. Needless to say, they broke up.
