For any pet owner, the thought of losing that pet is the worst possible thing. We do what we can by providing a collar with information, ensuring they are microchipped, and even setting them up with a wearable GPS tracker.
But unfortunately, pets can still get lost. That is what happened to this woman in May 2019 when a driver crashed into her gate, leaving a hole that her dog Kovu escaped through.
Aisha Nieves first brought Juvo home as a seven-week-old puppy. And like many dogs, Kovu instantly became Aisha’s “baby.”
And in 2019, when Kovu escaped, Aisha knew something was wrong before she even realized he was gone because he didn’t meet her at the door when she arrived home one night.
“I had a lot of emotions going through me,” she remembered. “I was crying, thinking the worst, thinking somebody kidnapped or hurt him. I was just devastated. He was there for me through everything, heartbreaks, ups, and downs, and now he was gone. It was so hard to accept.”
Aisha did everything she could to find Kovu, but she didn’t know her dog had been brought to the local humane society. After four months of Kovu was adopted by another family before Aisha was able to check in with them again to see if they had seen him. She was devastated.
Kovu was adopted from the humane society in October of 2019 but was returned in June of the following year because the family he was with were evicted and had to give him up even though they took great care of him.
When she was randomly looking through the humane society’s adoptable dogs, she came across a picture and knew immediately it was Kovu because of the scar over his right eye.
We should warn you; this part is emotional, so have the tissues handy.
Aisha arrived at the humane society worried that Kovu wouldn’t remember her after their years apart, but all of her worries fade away as soon as she sees her dog.
“I automatically go to the floor, like to get down, get ready, because I know he’s going to jump on me,” she recounts. “As soon as he started coming, he started squealing and screaming and yelling.”
The moment this happens in the video, you can tell that Kovu never stopped loving Aisha.
Aisha said it feels like they were never apart, and you can tell this is true by the way the two of them are together.
While Aisha can tell us how she felt after losing Kovu, we can only imagine Kovu’s feelings as dogs can feel sadness and depression.
Although the ending of this story is happy, it is a reminder that when it comes to our pets, we need to be extra careful, making sure they have a microchip and a collar with a current phone number.
We are happy Aisha and Kovu are back together again.
